It was great, wasn't it? The camera bike got a bit caught out by it!

    Stop saying "Turbo Durbo!!!!" :x
He's been watching too much Backstage Pass...
Carlton barely pays attention to the cycling he's commentating on, so I find it hard to imagine he watches any in his spare time.

    Ha, probably!

I caught the end of the women's on the no commentary channel and it was entertaining.

Didn't get as much of my essay done as I was supposed to do today...

If he was Juul Jameson I'd agree.

I've not seen mention of Scott Thwaites's 10th place. Another good ride from maybe Britain's most underrated cyclist.
Noted by imatfaal on page 4. Tuscany is a long way from Yorkshire. Good going by him, for sure.

But it’s nice to see Kwiatkowski winning. His E3 Harelbeke victory feels like a long time ago.

    Race of the pain face.

    Few thoughts.

    1) Kiwa loves this race, and loves it when it rains.

    2) Loving the non-classics riders who gave it a proper go; Dumolin & Pinot. Loving this new generation of riders and at their attitude to racing.

    3) Cameras were right in the thick of the action, which was great TV, but i felt quite a few times they were affecting the racing. Riders drilling it hard on the front with guys behind getting dropped and the camera is about 1m away.

    4) why on earth was Kirby discussing skin colours of Italians and English people when the leaders were starting the final gravel section? Why on earth was he discussing skin colours?

Here's a classic. Kiwa is, according to the clock, 20 seconds clear, and it looks it too. He crests the hill and sticks the big ring on so his cadence slows. Kirby: "maybe he's waiting for the group to come back to take his chances in a 1 in 4 shoot out. he's got a decent sprint so maybe he's doing that." YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND RACING. WHY ARE YOU COMMENTATING ON THIS?

Oh another one: "this race has more elevation that paris roubaix'. OK. ARE WHEELS ROUND TOO?

Why is he going on about Italian cantons at 4km to go?

After 10 mins in the attack, he says about Kiwa: "he's going for it'. FFS.

At 1.5km to go. "he trusts his machine, so at least that' something less to worry about". WTF?

At 200m to go, over 30 seconds clear. "he's starting to believe". what?

    Christ he's a f*cking moron.

    .....

Even Mrs MM - who hasn't quite realised that P&P have lost the plot - was baffled by Kirby yesterday.

My favourite was recounting and agreeing with someone who had said how it was just like Yorkshire.
Apart from the vineyards, plane trees, architecture, geography maybe....

Yes. It's generally got a fairly early finish. Not sure why though.

    Wonderful place.

I am biased, being an unashamed Italophile, but the area around and including Siena is just about my favourite place on earth. Was really fortunate to work there some times when I was living not too far away. The old city is astonishingly well-preserved (thanks, Black Death), and the Campo is stupendous.

Damn, I wish I still lived there!
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

And whilst they speak Italian generally free from dialect, they have an extremely strong accent that makes it sound Spanish.... and historically people from Siena are known to "dislike" outsiders (i.e. those not from Siena)well, to a certain extent. Fantastic place though

The Senesi definitely think they're a bit above everyone else. But I think Italians generally think that where they're from speaks the best Italian, has the best cuisine, etc. It's a funny Italian characteristic.

An Italian friend told me an old joke:
God made Italy beautiful; beautiful countryside, beautiful food & wine, a beautiful climate. Then he said "This is too good, nowhere else will compare", so he created Italians...

Enjoyed catching up with the race last night. Looks a lovely area and I see that there is a SB sportive... might have to go on the list for next year provided it doesn't book up months in advance like Flanders these days.

Little Flower looking classy - though he could do with some black shoes

There are two sportives. One in the Spring that starts from the south which is less booked up and the "classic" Eroica that starts from Giaole on the first weekend of October which I did with a friend last year. 210km (well 220km with ride to start) and around 4000m of climbing including the classic Mont St Marie

The autumn event is like the Marmotte - very heavily subscribed. You also have to ride on a pre 1987 race bike, the older the better and in clothing from the "epoch".

The Nova Eroica may be more your thing. Modern bikes. Registration for this year is still open for the end of April if you wan to have a pop.

He has black socks though I can't remember whether that helps or not in the great sock shoe debate.
