It is unfortunate that the wide angle lens required to capture the scene flattens the gradient. I guess you can’t have everything.

Rarely do I capture the steepness of hills in photos. It seems to be really hard, unless you're in an urban landscape and can contrast the slope with verticals, or some other reference.

The bad news is that the forest fire near the house has flared up again, and with a strong wind and everything tinder dry, it's actually getting a little scary. On the other hand, the things which this afternoon have reduced the scare quotient somewhat gave a good photographic exercise, which I think I've passed. (There are three of these bad boy planes making 15-minute round trips to Lac Monteynard near Grenoble.)

Can't decide which one I like most. (Uncropped, and pretty happy with the framing.)

Eek. Hope they are successful in containing the fire. East Devon looks like it would not take much to go up either.

I liked the collage of materials on this barn. Almost has an abstract quality to it.

I definitely prefer the first pic, but hang on, the second one is banking nicely. Now I'm liking the third one heading straight at you. They've all got their merits, and I'm of no use to you whatsoever.
Oh, and I hope you and the house are OK.

Yeah, thanks, no help at all, that's just what I thought.

Looking much better tonight at the mo, and the wind's died down. We might yet live to tell the tale tomorrow.

I confess it was taken with this forum in mind. 😉

Grrrr. I love my Sony HX-60, apart from the fact that if you stupidly leave the memory card in your laptop, but take the camera on a lovely ride, taking lots of photos, not once does it tell you've been an idiot. And unlike the older HX-50 it's go absolutely no built-in memory. Grrrr.

Oh well, that's a ride that will just have to be a fading memory in my head. It was a lovely view of Mont Aiguille, by the way.

Fire's not out yet, BTW2 - helicopters still whizzing to and fro. Not looking quite so dire though, at the moment.

    While we are doing rants….😉
In an area with a tidal river that is only scenic at high tide, when the sun is in the worst possible position.

The Exe often plays that stunt on me. Why don't the time and tide wait for me?

I had the opposite on my run just now, everyone perfect but tide out leaving ugly mud banks.

You can have this one from a while back showing it at high tide with some autumn colours

No picture taken as it wan't worthwhile.
What would you prefer? An overcontrast bleh, or mudbanks?

I've now had three FB photos linked by national news services about the fire - the latest one was up with an article within minutes of my posting it this afternoon... I think I'll ask for a % pay rise from my boss.

Well, the fire's taken off again, and France Bleu are after my photos... I wish it were for something less awful. Such as cycling. Oh well, I'm getting good traffic on the Facebook Page...

Terrible news on the fires, but good work on your photojournalism.

I've just driven back now, and in one campsite I saw 3 campfires burning right next to a tinder dry hillside. They've only just fought one fire near there.
Another heatwave on its way and there are too many fools around lighting BBQ's when and wherever they fancy.

Boogger, rather wished I'd not gone out to look after lights-out. Didn't even manage to get a half-decent photo of the fire lighting up the night sky behind the hill 😥

Just got to hope that a still night slows its progress and that some Canadairs arrive early to drench it. Boogger indeed.

Mid day bleh V mud. Not happy with either.
Mostly as there is no specific point of interest. Has been a relaxing holiday though.

What about if you crop out the fields in the second one.

Thinking about it, I haven't had much estuary luck either. It's a nice walk, so I usually take a camera ever hopeful.

A nice golden light in the lower pic.
