Did everyone get a large vehicle to draft or just Mathis?

It's just a staggeringly shit place to stage the Worlds. Simple as that really.

And no - 38c in Spain isn't the same as 38c in the Middle East.

Heat index - Qatar is 60-65% humidity

    As I posted before.

    https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/qatar/doha/hourly

It's either 37 degrees and 25% humidity during the day, or 25 degrees and 55% humidity at night. Not both maximums at the same time. Or it could be a combination like now 32 degrees and 49% humidity. In any case, it's really not that humid which you would expect given that it is mostly a desert country.

..and I really don't understand "feels like" graphs like the ones above when 37 degrees never actually feels like 37 degrees.

Riding coat tails again, but true again. A situation seen in day night cricket matches in Asia, particularly.

And Spanish heat and Middle Eastern heat do seem different. The latter gets much more heat from fans.

Apparently the ambulance was nothing to do with the race, it was attending a seperate emergency incident and had been forced to take the race route.

True, but maybe not the fault of race organisation as previously thought.

This may or may not be true (hey, I'm posting on a forum, so that's a given isn't it?) but having done a small amount of reading it seems that "dew point" is the number to look at when comparing relative temps.

So for Doha in October, the high is 25 and the low is 15. I'm not sure what times of day that is, but 25 is in the "Extremely uncomfortable, fairly oppressive" category (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dew_point)

    https://weatherspark.com/averages/32878 ... whah-Qatar

Madrid in August (not sure if that's a useful comparison or not) ranges from 13 high to 6 low even though average temps are still in the low-mid 30s.

    https://weatherspark.com/averages/32057/8/Madrid-Spain

So it seems that's why it "feels" hotter in Doha (and why it might have been a stupid idea to hold the champs there, yada yada yada)

Current dew point is 2 degrees. Although I will admit that a temperature of 39 degrees is starting to get a bit toasty. Apparently it only "feels like" 36 though. Not sure how that fits on the chart above. Clearly there are different "feels like" measures.

But yes, it does appear that Qatar in October is marginally more humid than Madrid in August, but neither is really humid in the grand scheme of things.

It does seem a bit unfair that some riders will get better weather simply based on start times. This is often the case with wind, but at least that is luck rather than the certainty of riding in the maximum heat.

Still, Brandon McNulty managed to win from the hottest starting time.
“It was definitely toasty out but my home town is Phoenix, Arizona so I’ve grown up in this kind of heat so it wasn’t too big of a shock,” McNulty said. “Ian and I have been doing some crazy heat activation over these past few weeks. It wasn’t fun but I felt like we were activated enough and we could handle it and push through it.

“When I caught the guy that went off in front of me, I knew that I was putting in a really good ride. When I caught the Swiss guy, that’s when I knew it was pretty good. It was definitely motivating to see that I was catching the other guys and really good for the mentality to stay positive and keep pushing.”

Van Dijk hits the first time split in 9:56 that's 6 seconds slower than Neben.

PTP carnage, or saving it for the end?

Sorry, I'll join in with the masses.

Timings seem a bit erratic. It's probably heat related. No idea what they are doing holding the World Championships outside of Europe or North America. Outrage I tell you.

Oh wait, now they have some timing updates, must have been a breeze.

    Is that better?

Whats the difference between pushing yourself to exhaustion in the heat
    vs
overcooking a corner and smashing it into the barriers
    vs
    the above but it's raining

You know the risks, each have equally dire outcomes if your unlucky or you're fine if you're lucky.

I kind of agree with BB. It's not like descending down mountain passes in the snow where you could fly off the edge (although this happens in the dry anyway). It's also not news to the riders that it's going to be hot. It was announced a while ago.

I do agree the crowds situation is a bit crap though.

Anyone think that Jonathan Castroviejo is worth a punt at 20+ in the men's? He's been riding well all year and is probably more accustomed to the heat than Martin. Although maybe the same is true for Dennis hence why he is a popular pick.
