  • I reckon it could be ok, big breakaway big gap, teams with an on form sprinter arguing about whos going to do the work - break stays away - finally in the last 50K the odd domestique sent up to help - starts coming back VERY slowly - PANIC and arguing sets in in the peloton - belief starts to flicker in the heads of the break - into the tech bit a minute ahead - break starts looking at each other - a scouser makes a break for it out of the break - into the finishing straight- peloton appears round the corner making an approaching but colorful haze - 300 yards to go 12 seconds - COME ON THE SCOUSER DONT LOOK BEHIND YOU- EPIC edition

Please note that I am keeping a list of all of your doom mongers and will be reminding you if you start raving about the race during/after it happens...

Indeed, it is one thing declaring a race boring afterwards (or "not a vintage edition" in BR parlance), but it's something else completely moaning about it before the race.

We NEED a real howling wind.

Otherwise I'll keep an eye on the spoiler thread and tune in with 5km to go.

Don't the twisty circuits give breakaways a good chance of staying away?

A bit but it's not like they'll be caught by surprise by the circuit.

Few things from the Boonen interview recently.

    1) he's talking as if it's forecast for heavy wind

    2) he says the heat will be "surprisingly difficult". Even half an hour without a bottle and you "might as well go home". Says that will be tricky if there are lots of echelons.

    3) he feels alright post crash - was suffering mainly from whiplash but has been training "surprisingly well".

    4) Last race of his career will be 2017 Paris Roubaix.

Hope he doesn't fall on the track while waving a flag about.

Needs to keep it black side down in all the races leading up to that first....

Shouldn't be a problem, given the Etixx bikes are black... :-/

I've been fortunate enough to have cycled in numerous sh!tholes around the world - and none come close to matching the sh!tholedness of Qatar. As culturally bereft and geographically barren as a place can be.
I'll still probably watch, though: Cav's last WChamp chance?

I'd have thought so, looking at the next two
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

I can't vouch for Qatar but if it's anything like Dubai, I hear ya.

  • Seems the UCI have woken up to the fact that it's flipping hot in Qatar during October. Duh.

Current weather forecast for weekend after next, although still aways off, is for temperatures to rise.
5kms should deliver just the same result as 250kms, so no worries.

Fer reelz, the riders should just stay on the hotel sun loungers - Team Germany will have the towels out the night before - until the final 20 kms max

So how hot is too hot, anyone?

It's not as simple as a particular number. Depends on humidity, wind, etc as well, non?
  • What Dish says

High 30s when they roll out can see go up waaay beyond that once they are out in the desert, no shelter, the heat coming up at them off the roads, headwinds making it even worse. Reports of riders powermeters recording up to 54 deg at the Abu Dhabi thing last year - race officials ended up cutting distances. This was pre-Extreme Weather Protocol...
  • Soft Europeans complaining about petty things like heat.

    Ghader Mizbani next world champion.
  • So how hot is too hot, anyone?

In the midday desert . Trying to catch Roaelandts, Van Avermaet and Naesen with Boonen Debusschere and Keisse on your wheel. In your thermals. And overshoes. With flu.
  • On the weekend, Accuweather had forecast 40C for the men's race and wind gusts of 50kph (good).
Today, it's down to 36C and gusts of 35kph(meh).
    Less humid though, they say.

A bit like week 1 of the Vuelta when it's down South?
