Tough day today in the Road Race. Jumped away on the first lap with another rider - created the gap for my teammate to come across to (which he did with a few other riders) and they formed the break/lead group for the day.

After that I rode around as hard as I could (mostly on my own) and got some good Hour Record training in!

Finished 7th in my category and 24th overall. Teammate dropped his chain in final sprint unfortunately and ended up in 5th.
  • I am also training for the hour... but I am 36 years away from my assault to the over 80 one... the only one I have a realistic chance of matching... just have to maintain the form... :-)

  • Interesting to see Colin's comment on Twitter -
Our mixed category road race in Rio saw the top 7 spots go to C3 riders. Simply unfair on the C1 and C2 riders to race for the same medals

Is that something that's becoming a bigger problem as the competition has intensified, or has it always been an issue with mixed categories? I was having a conversation last night about the French guy with the unusual chair in the tennis, and it was suggested that the problem was largely that it tilts the playing field towards particular athletes within a single category. I should imagine that's worse when categories are combined like this?

It's a particular problem only in the Paralympics where the actual number of medals per sport is limited - so they have to decide how to hand them out.

In a normal World Championships, it might be a combined race, but there would still 3 medals per EACH category.

  • They certainly seem worth the effort - I love the presentation boxes.

Interesting that the Paralympics doesn't run so many categories - I'd always assumed that combining them must have been the usual thing for para-sport (to the point where I actually wondered why they bother having two or more categories, if the differences aren't so large).

Very sad to hear about the Iranian cyclist who has died after a crash in the road race. From the report it sounds like it may have occurred on the descent that people raised concerns about during the Olympic road race.

That descent isn't on the course. I think they're using the loop they used for the Olympic time trial.

That is correct - it's the descent off the Grumari circuit that they Olympic RR went over first (and was used for the TTs).

I rode it when I got here and it was scary. I can't believe they got TT bikes up and down it to be honest.

I rode the Chinesa Circuit today (which was the second circuit used in the Olympic RRs). However, we turned back at the top and went back down the way we came up (ran out of time). Even so, crazy fast and scary. I definitely would not make a good Pro rider as these types of descents scare me too much!

For those that have asked/are interested - my Hour Record attempt is going forward on Saturday Oct 1 - around 2:30 in Manchester. Part of the World Track Masters. You CAN come watch although they will probably charge you £8 to get in.

Alternatively, you can watch online at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j81ueVHGYKc

Tune in around 3:15 to see if I'm still upright!

  • Good luck for Saturday!
