Excellent work on this - but you've gone and sown the seed again... Thought I'd got over the urge to buy a vintage steel frame (although I'd build up with modern stuff wherever possible...

Hilary Stone has some decent looking stuff as well

Very last-minute, but any chance you'll be within some sort of lunchtime travel-distance from St Paul's tomorrow (Friday)?. If so would be good to meet up and exchange some second-hand goods for a bit of used cash.

hello sadly i wont have time to dig through the various boxes of spares tonight but if you still need it next week i'll route around in the man cave this weekend and pull out what I have, I cant promise but I also think I have some other vintage parts you can have as well.

    no cash required
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.

Thanks itb, no worries, deffo still interested, many thanks, though I'll probably finish it off this weekend anyway with the stem I've got because I'm itching to, and swap stems at a later date. I'll likely update the headset and crankset to be more "1990" at some stage too.

The levers that have just been delivered are 1987 vintage, and have the ability to route the cables either "old style" poking out the top of the hoods, or concealed. Looking at photos of 1986 TdF I notice there are no exposed brake cables so concealed it is. Hopefully won't disqualify me from Eroica events on this bike, though.

I have at least one and maybe two quill stems in the garage, no idea how long but certainly less than 130mm. Do you want to stop by tonight? I'm between where we met and Kingston Gate, let me know and I'll PM my details.

Well, it’s now finished. I couldn’t resist doing the commute on it on Monday, given it was a dry sunny day. Sure enough, I was fending off unsolivited compliments left, right and centre. It’s a small frame, so in the end I need all the 14cm of stem length, and with the stem more or less slammed, it puts me into a very racy position. I love it.

In particular, the front mech gear-change is like butter, really lovely. The rear mech with its clicky SIS a bit more tricky, occasionally I have to go “2up 1down” to get it to change properly. I suspect a sharp kink in the gear cable at the chainstay might be responsible, I’ll have to find a way of smoothing that out.

Anyway, some pics of the finished article:

edit: hmmmm ... might have to adjust the links to get them to work, won't be until this evening though...

Campag, right? Yep, that front change has been as good as the current top-end Shimano offering, for the past decade or so.

Yes, Campag throughout, mostly Croce d'Aune, though the front mech and the brake calipers are C-Record. So we're talking about no components younger than about 25 years old (except the saddle)

Your rear outer is way too short that's most likely the cause of the rough shifting

Yes I think you're right, and the fact I didn't have a step-down thing at the chainstay end to prevent the cable having a sharp kink also doesn't help, I think. Will apply some more orthodox outer and step-down thingy at the weekend.

  • I think the problem is that derailleur outer cable. I have one of those coiled metal ones, they look pretty, but they are too short... swallow the pride and fit a normal plastic one. Speaking of Swallow, my experience with it, it's that it sags very easily, so make sure it never gets wet if you don't want a hammock in place of a saddle

not sure where I'd put one of those. Ferule = "a flat ruler with a widened end, formerly used for beating children." :D

Same applies. Campag front shift is "lovely stuff". Not my words; the words of Shakin' Stevens.

As for the rear mech cable and ferule, what you need actually comes supplied with a new Campag cable kit; a metal ferule that steps down in the braze-on cable stop. I needed to use the same part for my Gios.

    EDIT:
