    That's a long seatpost!

Why are the other bikes retired?

The seatpost is high, but mainly it's distorted by perspective in the pic. I have a short body/long legs so tend to prefer small frames with an elevated seatpost.
Hoy frame was a stop-gap while my Dolan was being replaced under warranty. My plan is to turn it into my "Ireland bike", with a 50/34 and 12-29 to negotiate the many >20% ramps out there. Storck currently on the turbo (frame cracked/repaired).

  • The Nemesis were awesome... the TB14 pair that replaced them are nowhere near as good... nowhere near!

Although riding the Tissington trail at the Eroica I was glad I had a 20 quid clincher and not a 60 quid tubular!

I take it this build has taken so longer because you've been traveling back in time to collect parts but unexpectedly can across danB who is lost in time building his Scott and got distracted.

Btw how are you planning on stopping? Will the brake anchors be lashed to some kind of handlebar mounted pully system?
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

Given he's fitted Deltas I'm guessing he's not planning on stopping.. I got as far as riding my 1989 Peugeot Chorus 753 as a single speed with Deltas while I sourced a appropriate authentic drive train.

It was terrifying. Brakes have come a long way in 30 years.

  • Kudos on tubs. Although get some Veloflex Carbons on there.

You are going to flex the living shit out of that frame under load. 3/4" lateral movement (each side) in the BB area easily is where my money is.

PS. When you say just levers and cables to get, you may want to check whether you have a chain.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

My 1980 Super Record brakes are pretty good... I've come down some serious descents with no problem at all

Hahahaha. Chain arrived in post yesterday (Campag 9-speed, I'm told slightly narrower chain than the contemporary one works better).

I'm no expert, but I think the first-generation Deltas were "3-pivot", which basically didn't stop you. The final generation were "5-pivot" which were, apparently, much more effective. These are Record 5-pivot ones, I'll let you know once I've tried them (assuming I survive).

But extremely pretty though they are, they are the most stupidly overdesigned piece of engineering I've ever seen, 130 individual components for a single brake I read somewhere.

As for the tubs, it's only as a result of a conversation with a guy in a pub after 2-3 pints of Erdinger that I got sold a pair of rims.*

Frame flex - until a couple of years ago I used a similar-vintage (but too-large) steel Pinarello as my Plan B bike, so I know what to expect.

*That guy was ugo, and you can see he's still selling them to me, a few posts above  . Seriously, I've never "done" tubs and thought this was a good opportunity.

  • Tubs are lovely and the good ones with latex inners sound awesome... it's only when you hit the economics of 20 quid a puncture repair that you realise they really are "best day only"

    I like it.
Still want to get myself an old steel framed roadie. When I pinch the boys bike I'm always impressed with the ride even with the complete mish mash of parts fitted. Still haven't worked out what the frame is though.

one old boy I met thought it was a Dawes

But to be honest no idea the folks I got it off, it had sat in a shed for quite a few years.

My Peugeot single speed is the most comfortable bike I've owned. It even beat a Ti frame with a nicely broken in Brooks saddle.

Could be, I think it's a good quality frame looking at some of the details on it but never managed to work out exactly what. I think the forks that were on it were wrong, but he bent them crashing into a parked car. The replacements I got look wrong unfortunately.

It's faster, more responsive, lighter and more comfortable than any bike I've previously owned. It will remain so until it's no-longer 'new'....

Nice bike, good luck keeping those Deltas balanced - there was a good reason the Pros dumped them in favour of standard side-pulls!

Surely for a 1990 bike the chainset should be C-Record style?

And I'd forgotten all about Croce D'Aune...

    Edit: terminology

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Thanks. Yes the cranks, BB and headset are all older vintage than the rest. I have an alloy early Record 10 cransket hanging around, which is very similar to C-Record, I might switch to that instead.

It's VERY tempting to try it out before I get the brake levers, but perhaps not...

    very nice build, looking good.

I was down at Stan's Bike Shack last weekend (a good mid-point for a ride - great snacks & coffee) and saw a late 80's early 90's steel framed colnago like this (googled pic).

spotless with full campy athena gruppo.

Bought as a complete bike; cost him £680 for the lot from 'some old bloke'

Latest, with added chain and cables, and better perspective. Gears all now indexed and working, and the fact I'm able to type this means that I resisted the temptation to try it out without brakes. 14cm stem frightens me a bit, it happened to be in the parts bin and from the old Pinarello. I might have to find a less extreme 10cm one.

The longer, the easier to handle, I typically use 13 cm

Quill stems? That's dark ages magicks there.

    So, the chainset.

That looks to my eye like, oh, 53/51. Not a big believer in the small ring at the front?

thanks ... I'll probably take you up on that.

My problem with such a long stem is I have a very short torso, and reaching too far forward for any length of time becomes uncomfortable...

Saddle arrived: a Brooks Swallow in WHITE (Limited Edition for the 2012 Olympics, they produced 500 each of red, white and blue. Found someone fed up with 4-year old stock selling them for half price.)
Brake levers sourced: a pair of 1987 Chorus levers with somewhat tatty hoods, should arrive tomorrow.
    Bartape: Selle white leather.
All above to be attached this weekend and ready to ride! Will post pics of final build.
