Stage 3 and the race heads out of Normandy, and towards the Loire. Another fast day with barely a wisp of wind to slow them down. Expect another mad dash for the line courtesy of Kittel, Greipel, Sagan et al

Pave du Jaquin

"This goat’s milk cheese from the Loire valley tastes of springtime pastures. A wonderful fudgy texture with a clean mild flavour with hints of lemon and minerals. Pair it with a crisp French chardonnay. Ash covered, soft, pasteurized"

I once worked on a goat farm near Dinan making Pave de Jaquin.

It's excellent, and tasted nicer when I saw how it was made. Just gone off milk, nothing else

Today we are moving down through the Armoricain Massif and dropping into into the very edge of the Parisian basin (which actually takes up a large part of north central France despite the name).

This means that the geology changes from the very ancient metamorphic paleozoic rocks of Brittany and into the late Cretaceous tuffeau (limestone), which is characteristic of the Loire valley. I know nothing about wine but I assume this has some significance in Loire valley wine making.

The geology here has more in common with Dorset, which also has a lot of limestone, and the rocks are about 90 million years old.

(Realised just how rusty my geology is!)

More significant than wine, (that's up tomorrow) this is produced locally....

....I thought we ought to have a very big bottle! :)

    Excellent effort all!

I was looking at the wine but I've never been impressed by Rose d'Anjou (this may relate to my budget).

Excellent choice of horse. I love a Percheron. So aesthetically pleasing.

Let me know if there's anything missing that people want from the geology - I'm afraid I don't have ddraver's experience in geology for the Tour and it's also about 6 years since I last did any geology in anger (no pun intended), so I am doing a lot of research... Looking forward to the Alps though!

I'm waiting for someone to own up to being the person with the bottle of Cointreau that Carlton Kirby shared a drunken night in a tent with...

Being pedantic, those cows are Charolais from Burgundy. About 5 hours East of Angers.

But they're in a field in Angers. Don't ruin it.

    Fortuneo-Vital Concept's Armindo Fonseca has a 4'30'' lead after just 20 kms.

Unconfirmed reports that he's having an existential crisis at what he's just let himself in for today.

My wife rowed in the Coupe Des Dames in Angers a few years ago.

And in the rece the lead is out to 7'20 with 147 kms to go.
30 kms covered in second hour by the leader whilst the peloton are on a slow club run.

France 3 is now live, if that's the right word, since the bunch have a wopping 150kms left.

"they got hit by a car on the wrong side of the road in Spain don't forget"

Forget!? Forget!? You mention it at least every 10km at the moment and Giant Alpecin haven't even featured in any of the stages yet

Used to happen a lot more than it does now.

Vuelta and Giros were particular offenders.

Respecting the yellow jersey with what Sagan said about no respect and dangerous racing
