English National Anthem

As our illustrious parliament finds it doesn't have much to do these days, it turns its collective mind to the pressing matter of an English National Anthem.
"Jerusalem" will be the predictable favourite, I suppose. What a waste of time.

God save the Queen is an awful dire dirge of an anthem. Lets have something new about the country we can all get behind. Employ John Williams or just use the Indiana Jones theme and add some stirring wordsPinno, מלך אידיוט וחרא מכונאי0

I was thinking the same thing! Jurassic Park would be ideal.tick - tick - tick0 -
I agree that the religious overtones of Jerusalem count against it but given that it is probably the only song with enough backing to become our anthem I would probably take it over the current pro monarchist dirge.
Don't have a realistic alternative - personally I'd be happy with that Fat Les song from a few years back but maybe more chance of something like New Order reworking World in Motion into an anthem.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
The whole point is, according to some half-wit MP, we need an "English" one, not a replacement for the UK one. Presumably so we can bellow it at the Welsh/Scots at the next sporting fixture. Why don't these people get a real job?
Still thinking of an appropriate replacement. Perhaps we could have an X-factor type event to choose one? Or have one without words?Ecrasez l’infame0 -
About time too!
It needs to be something upbeat and rousing though.The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Billy Connelly once said that the theme from the Archers would make a good national anthem
Jerusalem's lyrics are thought by some to be about sexual reform, written in an age when it was criminal offence to be homosexual. "bring me my spear, oh clouds unfold" and "nor shall my sword sleep in my hand" take on different meanings when viewed in that context.
But fully agree, God Save the Queen is bloody dirge.
The older I get, the better I was.0 -
In the spirit of empire why can't we just identify an existing national anthem and take it as ours ?[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

Although I'm sure someone like stevo666 would prefer a catchy ditty by Skrewdriver.0

Snow Fell would be just as exciting as God Save The Queen. If we do replace GSTQ as the English sporting anthem, can we have the f**king England band shot as traitors if they play GSTQ?0 -
Another possibility: Game of Thrones theme. Here are the Royal Guards performing it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wGoDkSWHgQtick - tick - tick0

'Rule Britainnia' is quite upbeat and the words would annoy the Euro lot."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0

Nah, they'll just laugh at the deluded Brits.0 -
Baddiel & Skinner & Lightning Seeds - Three Lions !
obvious choice, there can be only one0 -
There's been a lot of waste of time and money over national issues in my lifetime. Perhaps wasting a bit on the English is a nice gesture and a lot less money to than the cost spent on devolution, new.national buildings to house new tiers of politicians. If he was asking for a new English parliament and parliament building I'd be against it.
Pros - it would help you to rouse the fans of English national teams, identify England as different to the union and possibly develop acceptance of English nationalism as positive not a fascist or racist movement such as national front or EDL.
Cons - cost of a 10 minute motion followed by a few other debates and votes later on. We end up with.Jerusalem the women's institute! anthem as our national anthem.
BTW telegraph has a vote page for 10 most popular. David Bowie changes is in there but I'd prefer heroes might be a better Bowie song for an anthem0 -
I really cant see the problem with having God Save The Queen as the national anthem. We are talking the Sex Pistols one aren't we?0

It has to be Elgar: Land of Hope and Glory or I vow to thee my country.
Dambusters, skipio, and the Spitfire Prelude and fugue have no words.0 -
ooh now see i vow to thee is a great shout!! Why is no one saying that??
(cos the tune's written by a dirty german i s'pose...
Holst was English wasn't he?0 -

As is 'World in Union'..... Would cause some confusion at the RWC.0 -
oh...I had always assumed he was German. Live and learn...
Did you also assume he was dirty?0 -
This one has quite a following, I'm not saying by Beck Goldsmith (even though I think it great) , but the words are very apt: -

I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above,
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love;
The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test,
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best;
The love that never falters, the love that pays the price,
The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
I heard my country calling, away across the sea,
Across the waves and waters, she calls and calls to me.
Her sword is girded at her side, her helmet on her head,[6]
And around her feet are lying the dying and the dead;
I hear the noise of battle, the thunder of her guns;
I haste to thee, my mother, a son among thy sons.
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago,
Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know;
We may not count her armies, we may not see her King;
Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering;
And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase,
And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace0
