It's not been too bad on my route, I'm 'lucky' that I've got main roads the whole way in, I spotted a couple of patches of ice, but nothing major and I've not really got much in the way of corners on my commute either.

Really suffering with my feet though, just can't keep them from going numb. I've ordered some neoprene socks as a last resort. If they don't work I'll have to look at heated socks or something.

  • Ridiculous weather. 17 degrees warmer than yesterday, building up to gale force winds, and all the snow is now deep filthy slush over ice.

back to LS Gabba and nanoflex 3/4s. I hated that last few days of cold and welcomed back the rain and wind just cos it was just that bit warmer

No it's not. Vastly warmer at -5 and dry than 2 and pouring with rain like it was this morning :-(

quite the dry crisp days/nights are much nicer than the dank wet, though did have freezing fog which was cold though very beautiful!

I just have practically zero bike-handling skills and the ice and frost made some of my weekend / alternative route ridiculously scary (about as steep and twisty as Essex gets: it would be called flat in the rest of the world) - rain and wind I can cope with.

Admittedly I prefer cold and crisp - but only when cold is not sub-zero :-) Although I did pick up an Etxeondo winter jacket for a song on flea-bay and it is almost too hot to wear it now. Very nice BTW - but sleeves and back a little short

  • Should be ok for you tomorrow. Bad, clearly, but ok. No way on earth I'm going by bike tomorrow.

(But only cos I'm having wheels delivered to work)

Force 8 tailwind forecast for the way in tomorrow. I'm thinking that if I just carry an umbrella I'll not only stay dry, I won't need to pedal at all.

Lucky you, a force 8 side wind is no fun, not so bad when it tries to blow you off the road as you can create your own space, but when it tries to blow you into the passing cars it's a bit scarier!

Sadly wind was a bit of a damp squib. The rain, on the other hand, was just extremely damp.

Frosty this morning though, only just warm enough for T-shirt and shorts.

Better luck next time? Tomorrow morning's forecast...

(here if, as usual, the flickr link doesn't work)
That is in km/h, I should point out, but I'll be travelling round about the gusting 91/97 time - that's force 10 - so I fancy my chances of beating my PB on this segment, even on studded tyres & wearing full winter kit. Probably saturated by that point too...

On days like this I reckon I could wear what you're wearing underneath what I'm wearing and not notice the difference

Yeah, its strange how different people can be, my regular club ride highlights that, last week (Thursday night, so just over zero) the riders went from a few of us in base layers and long sleeve tops to a couple of Michelin man wannabes.

I guess it means you are more efficient as you are producing less excess heat!

  • I lived in Stockholm for a short stint and many people were cycling there even in the snow. If the road has had some salt on it then it shouldn't be a problem if it's not under -5 C. Just watch out for ice if it's under freezing an you should be okay in any weather - wouldn't say there's anything you would call too cold!
