I assume nobody will do more than 400 Km in a day... :-)

Even a slow rider with knackered lungs can do 600km in a day.

As in 24 hours? That is 25 km/h if you never stop. Not sure how many do in practice. Either way, 36 points well deserved. I think it is a good idea to challenge us to go a bit further in our rides.

EDIT: I think you are talking nonsense. The 24 hour TT record is just over 800 km, that is with time trial equipment by top class athletes. Now you claim that someone in poor health coul do 75 percent of what a top athlete can do.
My lungs are ok and I cycle 8 thousand miles per year. At best I can do 60-65 percent of what a top athlete do, in terms of power output... The jump to 75 percent is a pretty big one.
I appreciate in your bubble of long distance audaxers you know a few dozen people who can do that, but those are hardly Joe average... Or folks with shattered lungs

I refer to myself with the knackered lungs (chunks of one of them chopped out 7 years ago). 600km in 24 hours is nothing super special in a TT - I just about scraped it and was most definitely mid field.

For reference the record for British 24 hour TT is not far off 900km (541 miles).

    Anyway. All OT.
  • The problem of being in a bubble is to see that as normality. People who think of themselves as sporty cannot understand how I can cycle 60 miles... likewise I cannot even imagine what cycling 600 Km feels like. I have done 200... so I'd have to go back and then forth again... for most people that is tiring in a car.

You have to appreciate that whilst for you it is normality, for 99% of the people, including people who cycle, that is not normality. If you look at the rides posted in this thread, over 90% of them are under 200 Km. For most people it is already a long way to cycle in a day...

I'm pretty sure if you asked Sagan or Froome to cycle 600 Km in a day they'd show you a pair of fingers (Froome) or a middle finger only (Sagan). Even the bonkers stages of the early TdF, the ones that Desgrange designed to be fit for super humans, rarely exceeded 300-400 Km

Just completed, very scenic ride through Cheshire lanes and villages. Bit grey but hey ho.

Should get another 1 or 2 in (half tempted to have a stab at the Festive 500 depending on the weather), was a bit hungover this morning but I figured it was worth getting it in the bag just in case the weather turns.
  • Well that's me done. Not my best year but happy to finish on 50.
Thanks for running the show Pollys Bott.

See you all on the 2017 thread. ;)

    Yep many thanks!

A mixed year, started by relocating one of my business's showrooms, which took me away from riding. Then went crazy and rode to the south of france and back. On that trip, I decided to get out of my share of the aforementioned business and set up something new, so have hardly ridden at all since August. (I looked back on what I wrote at the start of the year - " this year is a little less demanding" - well that did not quite pan out!)

Next year, I will hopefully be racing TCR, so if I am not racking up the centuries in the first half of the year, then things will be pretty tough from 28th July onwards. Luckily new venture is starting to fall into place, and I will be able to ride more.

Chapeau to all who completed the challenge. Not easy to find the time for sure.

Final standings! Runner2Cycling stands atop the 2016 podium with a quite staggering 103 points, very impressive efforts too from Durrin & GdS Martin (late update of Nov rides brings him back in) to complete the podium. Whitehart is this year's lanterne rouge but the bottom line is that 20 completed the basic challenge of one century per calendar month, so well done one-and-all :D

And if you haven't yet signed up for 2017...
  • Excellent.... a top 10 finish on my first attempt deserves a beer!

Well done everybody who completed the challenge and also those who took part
