Odds on favourite for a prize today is... Tomorrows winner!

If there aren't any entries we'll add the Etixx bundle into tomorrow's prize.
I will wait till tomorrow then. Double bubble.

Sorry Blakey, I don't think there's an award for the most cynical forumite.
I never thought that there would be.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

    The Velocipede and the quandaries

The chorus of birdsong appears to me
when I open the window; it's spring.
The aroma of coffee fills the kitchen
as I quietly shuffle from here to there and back again.
    making clear my inventory:
The hat, the gloves, the helmet, the shoes
my kit, my bulging pockets, my indecision with attire
causing a reflex, that perpetual reflex:
of the things I may have forgotten?
which prompts me to lay everything out
like I should have done first, again...

No matter, the bike needs a once over
Spinning the wheel around to a quarter to three
to locate the valve and inflate accordingly
As I pinch finger between mud guard spar and spoke...again.

Loaded like a mule I head out along the misty road
The body feels cold, stiff and reluctant
my mind a heady mix of resentment, of mild indignation:
It's those cars, they are at fault and the lamppost and jarring gutter...
Cars and vans scurry by in their perpetual haste
I cough and splutter inhaling the noxious mix
My stomach is heavy, too heavy perhaps
    over zealously anticipating the expenditure
To avoid the bonk, that empty tank,
like the heart stopping moment when
You forgot some cash and you've run out of Haribo
but the jingle of change whilst riding over pot hole
(number Y times ten to the three)
is relief that the memory not too bad
as the overlap of countless outings
merge together over time as one
as one long ride, with no end, no start, no beginning.

The sun glints through a gap in the trees
With that flash of light, the anticipation grows
the heart beats a little faster
The reconciliation of an early night complete
The smell of the morning dew
for now I am on the long narrow road
up towards the moors, the wind rustling through the sharp grass
punctuated by farmyard smells, the cattle grids,
that constant gamble: bunny hop or slow
(with a smile to myself each time I flip the coin)
Lit by the sun, high above the awakening town
Away from the noise in perfect solitude
no traffic to impede me and toot their horns
    only the odd cow masticating
her eye fixed on me - a look of indifferent scrutiny
as her head tracks my path, chewing comfortably,
time is immaterial to this benevolent bovine.
I follow the road up, the legs reluctant
the air is still cool, my belly still full
As I round the top, the pressure alleviated
and the mind strays to some time ago
    some casual conversation I had
    an event that I witnessed
    a person I once knew...

As if I were in a trance, I wake up
I am on a bike! the body is conducive
It awoke some time back then
    back then in autopilot
Sun on my back, wind in my face
That odd warm/cold dissection of front and rear
that moment where I question the attire
in the indecisive seasons: Spring and Autumn -
all too familiar but familiarity is oft assuring like:
The distant church bells vainly ringing for a congregation
(A sound I always associate with a bike ride, little else)
The skylarks chattering up high, a mesmeric cacophony
This is living for this is freedom.

And I start to descend, from the bright plateau
The stream that runs briefly parallel
I think is in a race with me
I hear the sound of tyres upon damp road
and the water making it's way downwards
as it does relentlessly and it feels good
No longer burdened by supplement nor breakfast
It feels good to skip the light fantastic
    effortlessly with the gradient
Bike and man blending efficiently, quietly
the purring of the chain and gears
echoing off the bridge walls momentarily
    as I pass through
grateful of the space I have fleetingly occupied
grateful of life and the beautiful quiescent simplicity of my venture.

The road flattens in the valley
The sun obscured now, the chill noticeable
as I question my choice of attire once again
and my body adjusts to the cool,
    the effort to re-establish rhythm
the assistance from gravity now gone
and it starts to drizzle and I start to wane
my pedalling no longer easy but...
The turn: that moment when headwind becomes tailwind
all the effort gone before against the invisible force
The elastic that retards you, makes you crouch
makes the bike feel big and yourself small:
that 'snap' as it breaks and the bike becomes light
So it matters not the rain,
the assistance like a giant hand upon your back
now the bike feels small and lucid; lithe
now I feel strong, powerful, a wind induced PED
and the tarmac blurs as it passes under the front wheel
I get carried away and notions of conservation get lost
in the excitement of the gliding sensation
    that comes with speed
and the digital speedo inflates the ego until...
The tank drains, the water bottle empty
The larder now converted and spent...

My home; warm, welcoming, soft and stationary
    a motive, a carrot, a guiding light, a sanctuary...
Is what beckons as the hands begin to chill
    the clouds negating any warmth
potentially delivered by the weak spring sunshine
the sweat no longer a side effect unnoticed
as it cools on my back, around my neck
the feet; a ponderous extension as if detached
The metronome I have now become
grinding my way towards the haven
    and food, and warmth, and the ultimate satisfaction;
having fulfilled this inner need, (addiction) to pedal:
a mini adventure, an array of emotion...

There, I stand, I contemplate the miles just travelled
Trying to get those aching bones and muscles to respond
I look out of the window at the direction I had been
My head a dizzy cocktail, a kaleidoscope of the sensations:
The movement, the emotions, the shrill of the Buzzard
that jumping froli cking, bubbling stream
that poetic purr of the echo over the bridge
of mechanical purity: homage to the evolution of the Velocipede
and in a moment I realise the bump of reality
of the necessary, the inane, work, commitments
and the impending priority will shift soon
but everything is secondary to what happened before
as the warm water from the shower glides it's soothing way
a brief injection of spirit, a moment to saviour
an event to repeat at the earliest opportunity...

    Thank you.

I don't get to see the number of times I edited the post.

Suffice to say, it started off like this:

    I went

Here's an entry for today. Hopefully there will be lots of this going on next Friday:

This was my daughter getting a new bike for her birthday the other day. The EPO would kill me if she knew I'd posted this due to the state of the kitchen.

Just be grateful you can't see the sink. Why are teenagers incapable of putting things in the dishwasher next to the sink? Is it because the door is shut they forget it's there?
Maybe I should restage the picture in the front room with the Christmas tree as a backdrop. I should probably be excluded for being in green, but I haven't read the small print

As I have posted the only other photo today (so far) I would have to agree!

Amazingly you have managed to make a teenage daughter smile, so the bike was clearly a good idea!
