Donald Trump

Aw c'mon. I was asking SC cos you know his aversion to debt. I think much more that 2% would be required if Trump unilaterally withdrew all support to Europe. Don't want to find out.
Rough calculations are that taxes would have to go up by 7% to raise 2% of GDP, so it's not just a 2% rise.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Yeah you can fund some of it on finance.
Ultimately deterrence is a good long term investment. War is much much worse as even propping up a third country to fight for you is more expensive.
So it’s not about the cost - it’s the opportunity cost. And I’d argue not having the military might despots are frightened of is very costly indeed.
Given the stories coming out about trident anyway, I’d cut a deal with the US. They provide a full and holistic nuclear umbrella in return for Britain doubling the size of the military.

I don't disagree in principle, I just doubt the willpower for the required level of spending. Both in government, and the population. Also, Trident literally depends on the US. We cannot use it alone. We are not much more than US lapdogs.

If you're still hanging on at Twitter, an interesting thread about Jack Smith challenging a ruling by the Trump-lovin' Eillen Cannon in the Mar-A-Lago documents case:

There does seem to have been a few swings in his favour over the past 48 hours.
I fear for the future yet can do nothing about it so will just put the blinkers on and carry on regardless.

Always the mobster. "That's a nice country you've got there... it'd be a pity if it got invaded."

Also, a bit rich coming from a man who has 6 businesses that have declared bankruptcy because they couldn't pay what they owed.

Trump says loads of stuff, not much of it translates into action so let’s hope this is the same. He’ll probably be under pressure from his paymasters though

Dunno, he did quite well on his promise of things being wild on inauguration day. He's got a pretty determined lot using him, and if you follow the number of vote-suppression and gerrymandering cases being fought, you'll be aware how much Republicans are trying to tip the scales. It's a grim outlook.

It is unfortunate that in this case he is preaching to the converted. It will have went down well with enough.

Obviously undermining nato's mutual defence pact is incredibly serious but does he have a point in saying some members expect the benefits of membership without paying their way ?

I think saying Russia should attack who it wants isn’t really a comment about security funding in Europe.
0 -
Yeah I'm not defending his comment but while being worrying we've discussed on here the need for Western countries to wake up to new realities. If the agreement is 2% of gdp goes on defence some countries have been short of that for a long while.

Not sure that being seen as pro-Russian would go down well with his base. The problem is that any attack by the Democrats along that line would just be dismissed as fake news.

"The Russian attack would not be against us it would be against them who want us to protect them for free. #notfair"
Said from their/Trump's perspective.
Anyway, my fear is Trump's way of diplomacy of which this is just one example, and is scary.

It would have been unthinkable in the past that a Presidential candidate could say that and still hope to win. Russia was the big bogeyman, they would get involved in proxy wars all over the world to avoid Russia getting an advantage and even sporting events were viewed as proxy wars. But then I suppose he appeals to thickos who think anyone outside a particular demographic of 'American' is an alien lifeform and who are paranoid about things like the New World Order. I guess you can't really use reasoned argument on them.

Time will tell whether or not it lands well. I hope that you are correct.

Is it not just about Nato and it's members contributing, Trump admires Putin and his ilk, he wants to be like him.

If Trump does win what are the odds on him trying to remove the two term limit? I also wonder what the odds on either of the main candidates surviving a full term.

Anyway, this year, the majority of NATO members are reaching the 2% target (versus only 5 in 2016) and some are nearing 3%.
Let's not pretend Europe was just twiddling its thumbs for 8 years.

It would require a constitutional amendment which requires super majorities.

I feel like the posturing around NATO is more concerning than term limits,

I must admit I feel much happier about world peace, realising that Trump's a military genius, with full command of how things work, should he come to power.

I'm never one to defend Trump but that clip needs to be longer for context.

It's just the right length for comedy value. He has all the best words too.
