Zone 2 Heart Rate Training query

Why? What are you achieving by cycling in zone 2 and what are you trying to achieve by limiting your hr on a hill? You're over thinking this, just go out and ride, hard, there's no substitute for hard work.
It's explained well here :

Thanks, each to their own I suppose, I know that for me doing anything in zone 2 is a complete waste of time given the number of hours I train.0 -

Thought I'd do an update since I started this thread. It's early days and I've not done much because of the weather, but during the rides and turbo sessions I have done in the last few weeks, I've consciously tried not to go above my Zone 2 Heart Rate at all, and I've found it quiet enjoyable. I'm not really going any slower than before, just backing off on any hills by going down some gears and lowering cadence as necessary to keep to no more than 130 bpm.
I'm not feeling so tired, so hopefully I can keep this up throughout the winter and eventually get a bit stronger and faster while still keeping to my Heart Rate in Zone 2. Hopefully that will give me a much better base fitness than I have had previously - which was probably non-existant. This is not with the intention of racing or anything like that as I'm in my late 50s - I just want to get a bit fitter and faster which will hopefully make cycling even more enjoyable. That's the plan anyway.0 -
Yeah my zone 2 rides really wear the legs out by the end which is in contrast to the lungs on the interval sessions.
I thought zone 2 rides were meant to be over 3 hours to get the benefit so i'm doing it all wrong I think lol. So you can build a base even if its an hour zone 2 ride?
If you have the time then go for it!
My z2 HR is now at a power output that most calculation methods would call tempo. It's quite hard!
Nap has hit nail on the head here...
Some of these HR gurus need to sort Strava out , as my caculated Zone 2 range is huge... basically the rides in Coggans power zones from Endurance/ Tempo and threshold.. so NOT easy..
In Sufferfest terms , fancy doing 5 or 6 Downward Spirals per week in the off season...??? thought not.
I think the best advice is to ditch HR training for cycling completely.. if you can afford a bike or 2,and you want to 'train' as like it's the new 'golf' then you can afford a PM.. I can and I'm too old and skint and useless at racing.0 -
