the firm setting should be significantly stiffer than the open0

the firm setting should be significantly stiffer than the open
its stiffer than Open, i just couldn't feel much difference between "Pedal" and "Firm"
There was very little difference in the Monarch that my Scout came with.
If you change shocks I would go for a DB air CS or coil CS rather than the Inline, which is better suited to short travel bikes.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -

Good call. I couldn't fit a DB air or Vivid Air to my Tracer because of the design of the frame. That's no longer an issue.0 -
far far too much talking in here, we need more pics    :twisted:0

DB coil CS with a ti spring. You know it makes sense :-)Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

Would prob go air instead of coil
I do like coil, but they are a ball-ache to set up compared to air shocks, and heavy too
I emailed TF and they asked me to call them to discuss the Monarch. Ill see what they say before i swap out.0 -

I could feel a difference between all 3 modes when I had a monarch plus0 -
I had a closer look at things when i was cleaning the bike and oiling the stanchions last night
There is a clear difference between Firm and Pedal, i just couldn't feel it on the trail. However the breakaway point on the firm setting is quite low. Maybe this is a product of how sensitive the shock is.
What i did notice is that my sag wasn't set right. I did set it at 30% with full riding gear on, but last night in shorts and t-shirt, i was getting around 34% sag, so i need to revisit with the correct sag in.
If the sag makes no difference, then i think i may need to swap out for something Cane Creek flavoured.
At the end of the day, ive only ridden it once, so i need a couple more rides before i decide to drop £500 on a new shock.0 -
Chilly ride at Llandegla today. Deggy is my local trail so was a good chance to see what the Tranny was capable of. Annoyingly the ice made it difficult to smash all of the descents, but Parallel Universe was dry.
This bike is made to ride down hills fast. Stable at speed. Corners with ease. The surprising part was how often I didn't hang out over the back. The riding position is so central that even when things get a little steep, you don't need to move about much.
The shock def needs to go. The firm setting isn't firm enough and I don't really want 3 settings on my shock. Fully open its amazing, but that doesn't work when you need to honk it back up a fire road. I just need to decide between Inline or DB Air.

how have you been finding it. I'm on the verg of purchase and its between a supressor or a banshee rune. tranny in the lead though0
-
It's really good. I'd def recommend one.
I'm still not sold on the shock, although i did find adding a bit more air to it to take it a bit under 30% sag helped massively, but i still hanker after a proper climb switch. My wallet is contemplating a Float X2 with the new climb switch...
I'm planning on taking it to Antur in the summer. The stability at speed makes me want to try some DH on it.0 -
mine is coming tomorrow
you could always get the shock tunned0 -
Sweet
I've had enough of the Monarch. DB Inline on its way.
Fully open its a great shock, but i find the switching between the different ride modes a bit tedious, and the firm setting isn't firm enough for climbing up fire roads.
I'm planning a return to DH this summer, so ill keep the Monarch for this, as i reckon it will shine on a DH track when fully open, but for the rest of my riding, the Inline will be far better.
Just want to add an RWC needle bearing kit and i reckon we'll be good to go.
Pics to follow0 -
needle kit looks intersting for our rocker, my monach stiffens up nicely and I can clearly tell the difference between the three modes (more so open and pedal obviously). I'm toying with getting an X2 or a CCDB coil as I'm not convinced by the monarch. Time will tell as I need more action on the bike0
-
I had a needle kit on the Intense and it really does make a difference. I had to dial in additional LSC. Fiddly to fit though, and expensive too. With the shipping from the US its £35, which seems like a lot for some bearings.
X2 i like the look of, but id want to wait for the new one with the climb switch, and id worry how stiff that switch would be. After spending £500 on a shock, id want it to be as good as the Inline.0 -
the X2/DHX2 with the X2 lever is going to cost £560.0

Fitted the Inline on Tuesday night and took the bike to Degla last night
As expected, the Inline is a significant upgrade on the Monarch. The climb switch on the Inline is a sublime piece of work. How they manage to tune out pedal bob whilst maintaining compliance and grip is really quite good.
The base tune from TF was pretty good too. I dialed in a little more LSC, and i think it might need one more click of HSC, but apart from that it was spot on. Even their PSI recommendation was bang on.
On a more annoying note, my freehub seized up about halfway round. I was getting what i thought was chain suck last time i went out, so i cleaned up the drivetrain at the weekend. Clearly it wasn't that. I did hear a loud ping when i was honking up one of the fire roads, so i think one of the pawls has snapped. Will take it apart tonight to assess.0 -
any pics of the bike with the inline?0
-
boo - I'm still struggling to choose a shock. keep going to and from coil to air. I quite liked the inline on my ghost but I also liked the pushed Van RC I had previously too.0
-
So the seized freehub was in fact a couple of teeth snapping off and then f*cking up the inside of the hub
The hub is damaged beyond use, so speaking to Superstar about a warranty replacement
In the meantime I've found some Hope Pro2/Flow EX on PB for a good price, so hopefully picking them up tomorrow
Fox 36s will prob have to wait now0 -
Fitted the new wheels last night. Couldn't get the High Roller 2 tyre onto the back. Just wouldn't go on, even using tyre levers. Fortunately i was a week or so from changing to summer rubber, so have put the 2.25 Ardent on the back instead.
The hubs are indeed purple, but i think it kind of goes with the frame colour. Jury is out on whether l leave it there or add some additional purple to the bike to balance out. At most im thinking maybe grips and chainring, but thats all, as im a bit past having a matchy-matchy bike.

Yeah I quite like the purple mate but if I could I'd probably have a rainbow bike I'm really not fussed about matching colours and colour coordinating. Gutted to hear about that hub mate hopefully with it being so new you'll get it covered under warranty.0

Rode Deggy tonight. These wheels are amazing. So stiff and solid. Increased confidence in terms of control and changing direction. All in all the bike felt dialled. The shock needs a bit of HSC dialling out, but only one turn I reckon. Th traction out back with the climb switch on is brilliant. I made it up both steep climbs, first time, out of the saddle for most of it. On the Monarch that would have caused a spin out, and that's on the HR2 not the Ardent.
Purple grips and seat clamp on way 8)
I think Fox 36s will finish this bike off nicely0 -
they had them on offer at CRC the other week for a stupid price - I'm tempted by the fast suspension upgrade for the pike damper0
