That's next year's summer holiday sorted!
Good idea. I think I might try and do something similar to the last time it went there. I did Ventoux, Alpe d'Huez, Annecy and then Paris. So I'll try and see the Ventoux and TT stage, then head to the Morzine/Megeve area.
Questions is, do I book something before the route comes out or wait until next week?0 -
I've already booked accommodation for the days around Bastille day near Carpentras from where I can cycle to Ventoux. Fingers crossed for no late changes although practically everything was booked around that time so somebody knows something or a little windfall has been talked up for the local service industry!
Very nice - a trip Ive done the other way a few times - both the coast way ie east of Avignon Arles Camargue Sete
and through the Cevennes
both a great cycle
looks like we'll have a house north of Beziers next year so i'll give you a yell !!0 -
Regarding the trains, IIRC you can't book a lot of services until 6 months beforehand. Might not be true of Eurostar but I think that's the case with SNCF.0

Nibali will ride the Tour next year. Just not for Astana. I reckon he'll be jumping ship in the winter. It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.0 -

I think it's down to Velowire (and cycling forums). It's easy enough to book something through the internet that you can then cancel or change if the route is different.
I've booked last minute for the Tour before, a few days before I was due to leave. Played it safe this year, I have a hotel near Orange so I can do Ventoux/TT stage and another near Sallanches.
Getting quite excited now!0 -
I've 2 weeks booked riding from Caen to Nice just before the tour. So will be doing Ventoux a week or so ahead of the pros. Still close enough to give it some extra spice0

Immediately dismissed on Velowire as a hoax. Sporza a bit gullible?0 -

No chance, Nibali doesn't want to ride the tour. He can make more money and keep up the pretense he's a top GC rider by not racing against the best."Unfortunately these days a lot of people don’t understand the real quality of a bike" Ernesto Colnago0 -

Pretense? You must have a very strict definition of top GC rider..?0 -

'Above average GT rider' - you're cracking me up now! The guy's got some serious Greg Rutherfod luck going on to win each GT. Anyway, he's not going to the 2016 TdF so it's pretty much irrelevant to this thread now.0 -

Part of winning a GT is finishing it - there's luck involved but being able to stay on your bike and having the constitution to get through 3 weeks plays a big part too - Nibali beat everyone who lined up at the start not just those who finished.
In any case it's reasonable to suspect Nibali would have gone into the big mountains with a lead on even a fit Froome and when you look at the final GC and Nibali's gap on the likes of Valverde it's far from nailed on Froome would have won that race.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -

Good work yet again from Velowire.
Ventoux on Bastille day
Stage 20 up the Ramaz and Joux Plane0 -
Have a look at the top 10s of Nibali's 3GTs and I think it's fair to say he's had a big dollop of luck for an above average GT rider that'll never beat the top GT riders.

The Fact remains that he outsmarted the others from Stage 2 in 2014 and put pressure on them to make their own mistakes as he contiued to win that TDF.
Yes OK the Psychology of the first week helped him stroll to a nice win.
Personally I think he should just tick the TDF Box and just ride the Giro. (like wiggo did in his own way)Organiser, National Championship 50 mile Time Trial 19720 -

Indeed! And thanks FJS for pointing out the 4 stages around Morzine/Megeve, I have some accommodation booked at a hotel between Sallanches and Saint Gervais Les Bains. Excited!0 -
Ventoux. Awesome.0

From that map it looks like another tough route with lots of days in the mountains, but the news-sites are describing it as more 'balanced' than 2015.... I can't find route daily profiles yet so will have to wait and see.
At least Froome wasn't wearing his sparkly suit at the presentation!0 -
I actually quite like that route. The devil will be in the detail with some of those flatter stages, and some of the mountain stages could, in their own right, be better than they are but the overall feel of the mountains is quite nice.
Two Skytrain specials in the mountains though.Team My Man 2018: David gaudu, Pierre Latour, Romain Bardet, Thibaut pinot, Alexandre Geniez, Florian Senechal, Warren Barguil, Benoit Cosnefroy0 -

We booked our accomodation in Samoens about 2 months ago, that was a good move. We go every year and this is the first time the tour has been up the Joux Plane in quite some time. There's a lot of work to be done, though. The road surface is very bad and there are at least 2 spectacular holes in the road near the top on the Morzine side due to landslides in that bad rain a while back.
Looking forward to riding up it on a decent road surface0 -
Is that an MTT???

First tt = 37km with some climbing up the Ardeche ; second 17 km - hilly/mountain one into Megeve0
