I can see why he's given up to be fair...

  • Plaza has been out solo for 100km

Now THAT will be a heavyweight win. WOW. Respect.
If Majka and Quintana keep this up is JRod under threat?

Hopefully. Joaquim really needs to show some balls.

As of yesterday there was 7 mins to 10th place. In 2012 Vuelta there was 16 mins and in 2013 and 2014 there were 13 mins.

Majka close to virtual 2nd on the GC. Shame we can't see that split between his group and the Purito Aru group on TV.

Plaza wins the stage at 35yrs old

Literally everyone i can hear or read is crushed for Dumolin. This will be the least popular win for...ever?

  • What a pity that dirty Astana take the GC win. Hopefully Tom D can come back stronger in the future.

    Great win for Plaza.

Really massive respect to Plaza for that win. Not like he was trying to stay away from a handful of riders - the breakaway was huge. And he even throws his mitts into the crowd, class and appreciation to the fans.

Respect to Goncalves and De Marchi for a strong chase. Caja are a great team.

Respect to Quintana for making a move and for Majka for matching. That is a quite an impressive amount of time to take.

Respect for Astana for playing it perfectly. LLS is an amazing teammate.

Massive respect to Aru for taking his first Grand Tour. My man has animated this race on so many occasions and totally deserves this win. He is a proper champion and adds a lot to the race. Congratulations Aru; first of many please.

Contador has a lot of good things to say and has respect for Aru. Sees himself in him.

Good final result for Chaves there too
  • Kirby has become the Steve Cram of cycling commentary over the course on 1 stage.

Having not posted untill now I'm in not position to complain, but 3 pages for the closest gt finale in years?

Great stage win too for Plaza.

Congratulations Aru, commiserations Aru. Thanks for a good show.
  • Reality bites - just cruel that it happened so late in the race. 2 stages and a GC top 10 is still a tremendous result.

Fair play, Astana played that too perfection. No complaints with Aru winning, worthy winner. Feel gutted for Dumoulin that he didn't get on the podium.

Hell of a stage win for Plaza too.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.
  • A classic stage in the way that Astana set things up.

Ultimately Dumoulin folded in a similar, but less spectacular fashion to Geraint Thomas in the Tour.

Multiple mountain stages and multiple mountains eventually took their toll.

For me, Kirby's sickeningly biased commentary left a sour taste.

  • Shame for Valverde to get smoked like that this Vuelta.

His Vuelta placings to date are:
    3,4,2,5,1,2,3,3,7

Dunno - got the feeling that we have lost a lot of occasional contributors this year. I don't want rabid offensive comments, but even nutters (with apologies to those who feel offended by the term) get the discussion going.

Aru has certainly built up an impressive palmares as stage racer - in first 3 years as a pro a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th in Grand Tours.

Interesting decisions ahead for Giant. With Kittel and Degekolb there, will Dumoulin get more climbing support? Perhaps they'll each get a GT focused on them to ride next year, but beyond that?
  • for some reason Im gutted about this. :(

  • Great interview with Aru. Note what he says about Contador, his idol, and about Tiralongo, his great friend, and my favourite domestique.

So, all this means not only that Jan Janssen and Joop Zoetemelk remain the only Dutch Grand Tour winners, but also that Breukink 1990 remains the last Dutch Grand Tour podium.
  • Sorry but anyone that thinks Astana winning this time is a better result than Tom D winning cannot be "a true cycling fan"
  • Difficult to say this but it has been such a cliff hanger the last few days this tragic turn of fortune against Domoulin has been the icing on the cake for a great race. It puts it right up there with the Spanish conspiracy against Millar as one of the most memorable Vueltas.

May the next 25 pass by quickly. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
