Arguably the most significant stage of a grand tour this year, and no spoiler thread?

PROFIL.png

6 seconds in it.

Apparently headwind on the last climb - doesn't favour attackers/Aru

Let's see what happens. What we know will happen is that a young new rider will win a grand tour, potentially the first of several. But will it be the first Dutch grand tour victory sine Joop Zoetemelk early 80s, or first Italian since, well, last year

When you said massive break you were not kidding!

I wonder which of these protagonists will clinch it.

COME ON ARU AND ASTANA RIPPING IT UP!!

LLS and Zeits in the break. Landa and Catldo have destroyed the field. Dumoulin has a small gap off the back.

    --

Now it is Landa, Aru, Quintana, Tom, Majka, Nieve, JRod and one or two others

Tommy not looking good at all...

Edit - however all back together. Tommy will benefit from people defending top 10 positions etc...

Landa doing a fantastic Audition to be Froome's super-domestique next year

Giant should have had one in front, eh.
  • Eurosport playing a blinder by timing all their ad breaks for the climb everyone regards as the likely action area.

Suddenly not looking good for Tommy, 20 sec gap and on his own over the top of the climb.

  • Landa back on, brilliant from him.

Normal order restored, got to hope Aru holds this. It is a monster long way to go.

Yep, looks like game over for him.

Game over. Lets see if Rodriguez attacks up the next Cat 1.
  • Astana played a blinder here. JRod now has a rider from the break and I guess he may get wide eyes at the prospect of 2nd. Lets see what Tom D can do on climb. It is a shame that he only has the worst time triallest of the top guys with him in this valley to help him.

Good team, that Astana team. Aru winning from that. Which is fair enough.. which is why TTT's are, of course, fair enough as well.

Where's Lotto when you need them! Hopefully he can have his team car give him some sly pulls when the camera is not on him.

Given the way Aru dropped Tom on that climb, I would be almost certain he would be able to get a big enough gap on the final climb solo, without any team help.

Such excitement this Vuelta. Last stage too, just like that nail-biter in the Giro.

How demoralising for Tom D, a long straight stretch of road and nobody in sight. Crap team cost him this.
  • Dumoulin going to finish outside podium way going. Is there a fight on for 3rd?

To be fair I don't think Giant went into the Vuelta thinking they'd up in this situation...

Tom D shelling time on this climb. Nieve dropped him. Definite that Aru would have gained all the time he needed and more solo.

Nice move by Quintana and impressive that Majka covers. Real shame he suffered that fever and lost a bunch of time - would definitely be right up there for the win otherwise.

Joaquim doesn't really have the aggression does he.

Great riding by Plaza...been solo for very very long.

A shame that Chaves and Meintjes are getting blown away.

Battle for 3rd on the GC has started between Quintana and Majka. Dumoulin over 2min behind Aru now.

At the front, can Plaza stay out in front for the win?

Isn't Chaves there with Aru? Or is it someone else?

Things are looking pretty good for Plaza if there's nobody closer to him than 1' 47" now he's over the top of that climb...
