Interested to hear how everyone's training is going and what you're up to.

My rides have been limited to weekends recently, with the odd pootle mid-week. I'm still very much working my way up through the distances. Yesterday was supposed to be 35miles, however ended up being 50miles thanks to a friend getting the wrong directions. Today I'm absolutely wiped. Thighs killing. Yesterday I managed to get cramp in both legs, which was a joy. Lots of stretching...

My training is going exactly to plan so far. I had an unexpected bonus of tagging on to a ride with Chris Froome, on Saturday. It made 90 miles for the day, and some serious upping of the pace, with the Froome ride bit.

For cleaning up after the ride, I can recommend the toilets in Green Park underground station - clean, much better than anything at the main event and good sized sinks to wash the face in! I've signed up with charity 'Hft' - seems a reasonably worthy cause and like the post above only asking for a £250 submission so I'll be happy to pay most of that myself in return for the opportunity to ride the route. Fingers crossed for weather like last year!

You definitely dont want to offend your car with a bit of sweat. Two hours without a shower what ever next! You never know you might really turn your wife on arriving home smelling like a human being.

It's not the smell that worries me, although I can assure you, it doesn't do anything for Mrs Slog. It's more wanting to feel refreshed and ready for the drive home. Fortunately I probably won't need to drive all of it, but certainly I'll have to get us out of London.

trainings going reasonably considering my health is compromised. I doubt i'll crack my target time, though I just need to ease off the pies, and smash the hills.... which is what I'm not really willing or able to do!!! :)

should be fine though ... hills don't worry me - I just don't go fast up them ... which is a bit of a pain as I'd really like to put a decent time in for this 100 ...

I've had a quick look at the FreeCycle route - it comes out to Bank - and a bit further to Leadenhall Market - direct route to eXcel is ~ 5 miles ... so considering a quick trip out there on the Saturday to register - leaving wife and 1yo on the freecycle circuit (she's a capable rider and no issues with leaving her for a bit)
Anyone got suggestions for a sensible but quick(ish) route?

your final time will have very little to do with how well yo do the climbs as they will make up 10-15% of the total

Pretty much this, you'll be better off not destroying your legs, getting over the top and cracking on.
You'll only lose lots of time if you fall out the back of a quick group.

Don't push too much in the first half otherwise you'll blow up at Newlands and die doing the hills. You want something left for the return run into London where you can pick up speed depending how good your legs are. Also think about wind direction - last year I had a headwind into London and my legs were dead.

If the hills were not jammed up with wobbly Golf-ists, then yes. Unfortunately, if you hit Leith ( in particular) at the wrong time, you won't be able to dodge the fally-offy, trippy-uppy, water cooler warriors, and despite the clear signs, and shouts from the marshals, you are guaranteed to get stiffed, by an accountant, on a 6 grand bike.

That was all going so well until you mentioned the 6k bike.
It made a perfectly reasonable rant just sound like jealousy.

Just how well-policed are the starting pens? I got a late entry through a charity via Evans, but they (Evans) have been useless about getting back to me with a start time. I gave them an estimated finishing time, but don't want to get herded in with the dentists and estate agents and noddy round at 15mph. A mate's club is riding it and he's asked if I want to join them at 5:20, but will that be a problem if I have an allocated start time of much later?

I deliberately selected a quick time in an attempt to get an earlier starting point - should allow me to get a suitable tow out before being dropped on the climbs :)

I did do a bit of a training ride yesterday - 35 miles and 2700' of climbing in just over 2 hours.... reminded me I need to sort out food as I was suffering a bit towards the end ...

They're not policed like a military camp, I've seen lots of people with the wrong colours, in the wrong pens.

I did 150 odd miles on Saturday, and 68 miles on Sunday, as a 'recovery' ride. I'm feeling it in my thighs a bit today.

It was my boys first birthday ... more important things for me to be doing atm than just riding my bike! :p

As I remember it they're pretty hot on moving up the start times particularly early on, we were all checked and a couple of people were turned away behind us. From what I understand they're not so bothered about those starting later than their official start time.

No, but I've got my finish time (/date) does that help?! ;)

5.20? Really? They starting an hour earlier this year then?

Having a later start time will not be a problem, just go up to a marshall at the pen you want to start in and say
" I am due to start in two hours but I want to start now" in a loud voice, and you should be fine

Being serious for a minute, its pretty lax from my experience, although I have never tried to sneak into an earlier pen.
If you get stopped you could always try the "yeah ok, I'll just go and tell my mates that I am starting later and give them my mobile number (insert other reason) scam.

If the organizers gave a monkeys you would think they could easily delete peoples timing chips and ban them from future events.
