Rare that I disagree pb but actually enjoyed this. Solid cast with beguiling Anya Taylor-Joy who rarely puts in a poor performance and Miles Teller giving off convincing leading man vibes. Good chemistry and decent premise I thought. I’ll agree it started to lose its way a little half way through and would have benefited greatly from a less Hollywood ending but well deserving of at least an IMDB 6.8 and worth a watch 😝 Few tweaks and could have been much better

    enjoyed the soundtrack too.

Agreed on the acting, they did well with what they had. The soundtrack too.

I just think they could have had the same storyline with less preposterous special effects.

  • Knox Goes Away.

Michael Keaton plays an aging hitman who is diagnosed with Creuzdtfeldt Jakobs disease, who accidentally offs his mate. I won’t say any more regarding the plot.

It works seamlessly as a thriller, case study drama, with a dash of film noir thrown in for good measure. Oh and there’s Al Pacino.

A subtle, yet powerful film. Has 7 on the IMDb Richter scale, but I would mark it a little higher.

Back to ATV+ and Sharper. A con film that's like the proverbial frog in a pot. Takes a while to get going but boils up. Don't want to give anything away so I'll say this, I couldn't see 2 or 3 moves ahead but each next move was fairly obvious. A solid 6.something.

  • Potentially, the James Bond films as we know them have come to an end, as Amazon gain control of the film rights.

I'd guess more Americanisation and even more action/special effects orientated.

It would be foolish to buy it and then substantially change what makes them a success but then Bezos has been hanging out with Musk so who knows?

Probably the British super spy will now be an 18 girl called Jamie Bond, with a really bad Bridget Jones accent.

Anyhow, the BBC have caught up:

  • The Father (2020)

    Stunning. Just stunning.

The narrative, and how it's used, is as effective as it is unnerving. Even over-whelming, in its effectiveness.

It really does put you, the viewer, right 'there'; in the maelstrom, grasping to understand.

Hopkins' performance is deserving of all the accolades.

Colmans' performance is, equally, affecting and powerful.

Damn, that was 90-odd minutes of great cinema.

  • And I should just say; that about half-way through, I was thinking that this had all the indicators of a M. Night Shyamalan-esque plot twist.

And I'm glad, and relieved, that it didn't.

Because people are going through this every day.

    Normal, average, people.

And that is what makes it so very, very powerful.

At the other end of the scale, I watched Finch on ATV+. Watch the trailer, if it appeals then definitely watch it.

The plot goes how you'd expect but the nuances elevate it. Much funnier than most comedies and watch out for getting dust in your eyes. A very solid 6.9.

Cherry on ATV+. Probably the best PTSD/Addiction film I've watched*. By definition, not a pleasant watch.

    Anora of Oscar winner fame.

Mickey Madison very believable as a feisty stripper and getting one’s kit off seems to boost Oscar chances. The cast of largely unknowns performing well with the back and forth between the pushy Russians and a plucky Anora at the core of an enjoyable film.

Best picture though? it’s been a poor year.

I decided that I wanted something light and silly so went for Renfield on Netflix.

Roughly what you’d expect but with some better acting than it needed (pleasant surprise, and nice Hugh Grant impersonation in one scene). Mostly an excuse for Nicholas Cage to overact to his hearts content while being in context.

Not a glowing recommendation but more than adequate if you’re looking for that kind of thing.

Longlegs-Nicolas Cage as a deranged psychotic killer in this horror/thriller. Quite gripping throughout. Slightly poor ending if I'm picky but well worth the watch if you are into that genre.

Sisu on Netflix. A switch off your brain OTT B-movie that Tarantino probably wishes he made.

Worth a watch if you go with that in mind.

Last Thursday, the film 'L'après-midi de Mr Andesmas' ….. made in 2004 and based on the novella of the same name by Marguerite Duras, starring an aging Michel Bouquet (he was then about 80) and the lovely Miou-Miou (though also by then no longer so young but over 50), on the french TV channel TV5-Monde.

It will be repeated this evening for those of you who missed it!
