you're such a miser, you'll fit in just fine up north
Just trying to give good advice, as opposed to any advice... just because something is reduced price, it doesn't mean it is good value. You are giving advie on products you have admitted not even buying yourself (like the all too useful merino underwear)
While some Rapha products might have a point, if they keep you warmer or drier or allow you to ride for longer without getting blisters around your balls (infact I do own some of their stuff myself), these are generic gloves with no USP, other than a Sky logo and a hefty price tag... and you know I am right
Having tried budget gloves, Specialized, Assos and Castelli; I stand by them being good value at £34, assuming you can afford to/want to.
I wouldn't touch the team issue version. No leather, and no padding. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Appreciate the suggestion of the merino boxers and pint but TBH i am practically t-total and don't like merino but I appreciate all ideas.
And my nether regions have finally dried after the soaking this morning so are toasty too. I will of course cool them down on the no doubt wet ride home whilst wearing soaking wet shorts.
Now I have an idea, waterproof shorts. I don't bother with wet legs and the cold does not bother my legs (indeed I used to walk up to December in shorts), what I do not like is wet nether regions so waterproof shorts might be one idea. Seriously I get the synthetic, wicking boxers and shorts wet through (run off from cag mostly) and due to no changing facilities I and up with damp work clothes for a few hours.
Anyone use waterproof shorts? Any recommendations and views on them??0 -

Or an alternative. Have used one of these for the last 5 years and they're excellent.

Waterproof is a word with little meaning in the context. If no water can come in, hardly any water can go out, so you'll just bathe in your own sweat. Breathability is something that even Gore-tex is not very good at. Basically there is no fabric or material that allows you to efficiently vent away the sweat while being waterproof whilst cycling.
If it rains, you will get wet and that's that...left the forum March 20230 -
But waterproof shorts are good for handling the run off from your cag IMHO. Pushing that issue onto your truly waterproof and breathable legs. For me the issue is about wetting out the crotch then changing into jeans or other work clothes which get wet there from the boxers (nowhere to change my boxers only a quick change of legwear and top).
Also I am guessing Waterproof shorts are less prone to having issues due to breathability being compromised. not least because they are so well ventilated. Cags and waterproof trousers are totally different and it is this reason that I prefer to use shorts in at least spring/summer rains. Wet legs are not an issue but for me wetness on the legs and the upper body are not a problem just the wet feet and crotch bother me.
BTW have anyone used some of the waterproof shorts? Looking at the Polaris AM 500 shorts. They seem ok and at this price a good deal.

Why in the name of all that's decent are you wearing boxer shorts to cycle in the rain? Do you not even have the use of a toilet cubicle where you can remove your wet shorts and don a pair of dry boxers and jeans?0

Seriously, if you saw our works toilets you would not even ask why I don't change in them. I am not too keen on using them at all for anything. Talk about biohazard!! No locker rooms only a corner of the workplace and I do not even have a locker!!0 -

Go to the pub on the way home and spend it on beer. It'll make that commute better, but the following morning may hurt.

"BTW have anyone used some of the waterproof shorts?"
I have some DHB eVent ones which I got cheap. I wear them if it is going to be tipping it down. As you say it keeps the run off from your jacket from soaking your nether regions (and protects them from road spray if you haven't got mudguards). And they do this without getting too hot and sweaty because of copious venting. I never cycle in waterproof trousers - I run far too hot and would be getting wetter from the inside.
Bit of a niche product for me though - use them perhaps one commute in 30.0 -

Better than expected, much better than carefully folding the shirt and putting in my bag. Put it this way, I am wearing a short carried in this morning, and it's as creased as everyone else's in the office.
Only downside is it's a bit chunky and heavy."Bed is for sleepy people.

I should be. Every other month someone mentions the folder thing as I change at the gym by work. Reckon Eagle Creek should give me some freebies for the number of times I've had to tell people the brand.0 -
