TdF 2015 - Stage 8 - Rennes to Mur De Bretagne **Spoilers***

Interesting article on ITV explaining the TDF timing system. I agree its a bit odd that if there is a bunch finish, the rider who was 99th gets the same time as the front of the peloton, yet if the 100th placed rider is 1 second behind he gets a completely different time (that does not reflect the difference between 99th and 100th, in ITV's example 99th was +0'01" and 100th was +0'14". Even when 100th finished 1 second after 99th).
Interesting that you thought that was interesting. For me that is exactly what is wrong with the ITV coverage - it's like watching Bike Racing for Dummies - would they stop to explain the offside rule before a football match? Anyone with even a passing interest in bike racing knows what the timing situation is and why it is like that - those that don't would soon pick it up. I don't want them to explain what I'm watching I want the commentary to add to it, I want the pundits to give me some opinion.
Still a niche sport and a lot of people who might tune in on a semi mainstream channel don't understand how cycling works. How many times has a non cycling friend asked how comes Cavendish wins all the time but isn't yellow jersey for example? So I get what you're saying but I think they manage a reasonable balance. Admittedly I did used to watch a lot of televised poker where the commentator would explain things as basic as the hand rankings in every episode so ITV's cycling coverage is massively in depth in comparison0 -

A warm welcome to cycling for the new guys and beginners.
P.S Out of 3 hours of coverage, the "guide to" was only on for 10 minutes."The Prince of Wales is now the King of France" - Calton Kirby0 -
^ I don't see the problem in devoting a few minutes to things that might be obvious to us. None of us were born knowing how it works. The Ned & Chris slot is deliberately cheesy but it goes down well chez MM.
If it pulls in a few new viewers it's better for all of us because it becomes more appealing for broadcasters and sponsors for the sport.0 -

Fine if you like that approach I don't have a problem with you watching ITV, I don't hence I watch it on Eurosport.
It's not just the 5 minute bit on stating the bleedin' obvious I was objecting to though - it's that that kind of approach runs through the ITV coverage - always telling us what is going to happen as if we have never watched a bike race before. Even if I was new to the sport I'd rather just pick it up - give viewers the chance to become part of the sport rather than treating them as eternal outsiders.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -
Groupe maillot vert has 20 to 30 seconds on the main peleton. Greipal, Kwiatkowksi, Lars B etc in break. Canondale chasing down0

Oooh I don't know, Europcar, AG2R, FdJ and Lotto Jumbo have been especially poor this year. The only time you ever see them is when they get dropped or standing up from a crashWe're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Every time I've seen Cannondale in the cameras it's because they f'cuked up and missed the break/selection.0 -

always been that way in all bike races.
Pretty much Boardman's view on it

Interesting that you thought that was interesting.
For your interest, I found it interesting because they still use this slightly unfair system despite improvements in timing, finish line photography, data logging , etc. But I suppose it makes our sport unique and gives it a quirk."The Prince of Wales is now the King of France" - Calton Kirby0 -

True - but they re not on the floor (99% of that is because Tyler Farrar has left though), I'd say they re the most mediocre - neither good nor bad enough to remember they exist. We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

I've been following cycling since the 70's but I'm more than happy with pieces like that. They're pretty well done and if they make it more interesting for new followers all the better. Should do the same with rugby.0 -
