Why must a team defend the yellow? I've never understood this. Would the team or sponsors really care about being able to brag about Martin having 2 days in yellow over a Cav stage win?0

Will be hard work for QuickStep leading the bunch from the start for Martin, managing potential echelon attempts, and prepare and lead out Cav's sprint
Presumably they will try to let a group go that aren't a threat to the yellow jersey. They will then be able to ask for assistance if other teams want a sprint. No doubt they will still end up doing all the work though..

You get mega publicity for being in yellow... interviews, presentations, photos etc.0 -

Benoit going for the double S option knowing he is on the BR radar
Doesn't seem very SKY - which would have been presented on their own designed App on a titanium IPad
what we looking at here? :?
Musette contents? X being normal food and drink, MF is meat-free and S is Special/Sugary?0 -

I would assume that, outside the 3 week Tour window, being able to put a picture of Cav screaming over the line arms aloft is better for the sponsors brochure than two pictures of Tony Martin in a yellow jersey. But I know nothing about marketing!0 -

The yellow jersey is the most prominent rider in the peloton. He's always on camera. How many times a day will we hear Quick Step Etixx yellow jersey wearer Tony Martin or Quick Step Etixx controlling things for the yellow jersey etc.
Plus there will be pictures of Martin for a number of days with his arms aloft on the podium in the paper.
It's fantastic publicity and is a real sell at this time of year when looking to extend or get new sponsorship. It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0 -

Fair point on the coverage. But he's not really going to lose it today if EQS don't pull all day? No GC team will want anyone in the top 20-30 in the break so surely they all would chase that one down. Seems like a slightly unwritten rule and it makes some sense, but as a infrequent watcher I assume eventually another team would chase if EQS sat back all day.0 -
The daft reverence for the jersey is just one of the human aspects of cycling that keep it from descending into the barbaric orgy of consumption that is football, or the Olympics. I'm just hoping Cav gets another yellow jersey leadout to add to his collection....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0

13:09 A thought for Faber
The race is in Mont St Eloi (km 3.5), the village in which 1909 Tour de France champion Francois Faber is believed to have been killed in action on May 9, 1915. The Luxembourg rider was one of three Tour winners killed in WWI with Octave Lapize and Lucien Petit-Breton.
Perichon (BSE) and Edet (COF) with 1'15" after 12 mins.
Wonder if yesterday's debacle will mess with TGA's ablity to pull a GTA on every flat stage by surfing the shadows until the final 3k....a rare 100% loyal Pro Race poster. A poster boy for the community.0 -

Bouhanni in a ditch apparently
I read this post and immediately started singing (in my head) "I know, I know, it's serious!""In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"
