In the hope of tempting the lovely Tusher back to the forum, I'll start this one off. Advanced Warning: There's not much hope of me being able to update frequently this year!

No Cheng? So who is the favourite?
Tufty Swine, the lanterne of 2013, must be in with a good shout.

    Hmm, interesting choice. A 7th place in the 2012 edition says he has potential, though he was beaten by nearly 18 minutes.

    He wasn't selected for "Our man", but I think Julien Vermote is in with a shout.

    He's the new Bert Grabsch, and will be mostly chasing breaks on flat stages and out the back on lumpy ones

    The fact that he'll be in Cav's sprint train means that he's unlikely to pick up those all important minutes on the flat stages though.

    It didn't stop Wim Vansevenant in Robbie McEwen's train, or Cheng in Kittel's...

    Confirmation of the resurgence of French cycling, with 7 riders in the top 10. Mikael Cherel takes the honours though, at +3'36", over 1 minute ahead of the next rider, Brice Feillu.

    Michael Cherel is the early leader. Nearly a minute slower than anyone else today.

    Beaten to it.

    Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

    Methinks that i may be awarded the lanterne this year. Well, the Forum Lanterne at any rate.

    Forgive me, kind sirs- but I've brought some dainty victoria sponges for you, and some meringues........

    Brice won't be there for long though, he was the leader of the legendary team BSE last year and finished the GC in a commendable 16th place.

    Tusher! Where the actual heck have you been? I was trying to remember your forum name when listening to the Cavendish thing in the Cycling Podcast...

    Tusher!

    Awesome. What a lovely day and it's been hot and I have no actual idea who's coming last but they deserve it, it was devilishly hot out there today :twisted: so who wouldn't be struggling.

    Hansen is only sandbagging in order to get the chance of riding 200km by himself to take a stage. This is also what will stop him from getting the Lanterne Rouge.

    None of them will make it through the mountains. (Except perhaps Hansen)

    An excellent solo breakaway by time trial specialist Dowsett to put his name into the mix today though - rare to see such a long-range attack succeed.

    Poor Alex! One of my mates said he was about 15 minutes down when he came past. He'd better not do too well in the TT or he'll scupper his chances of getting the lanterne rouge

    Adam Hansen not quoted on their site, surely a strong contender given his injuries and determination to finish GTs

    185 Laurens Ten Dam (Ned) Team LottoNL-Jumbo 0:50:30
    186 Alex Dowsett (GBr) Movistar Team 0:52:57
    187 Nicolas Edet (Fra) Cofidis, Solutions Credits 0:53:57
    188 Adam Hansen (Aus) Lotto Soudal 0:54:20
    189 Michael Matthews (Aus) Orica GreenEdge 0:58:13

    Poor show from Didier who finished just outside the front group, ejecting himself from the competition. The rest of the gang all finished in the gruppetto with Ten Dam emerging as a contender.

    That's a pretty solid grip the Anglophones have on the top five there.

    Worth also pointing out that past Lanterne Tufty Swine is sitting just outside the top ten, with less than 11 minutes to lose. A rider like him could easily go on a solo break and take that in a single stage.

    Can we start calling it the red light then?

    You'd imagine Ten Dam will either abandon, or recover enough to take time back in the mountains?

    We won't be, but even if we did it would still have to be "le red light"...

    How is the cut off time calculated?

    Is it a certain percentage over the stage winners time?

    I feel sorry for the autobus, I can imagine it's hard to maintain the pace over such a long hard tour and if you're struggling with an injury you could get slower and slower. I do feel for the guys who had to pull out.

    Each stage has a coefficient set by the organisers in advance which determines sprint points and other things including what set of elimination times to use.

    InnerRing has them here http://inrng.com/tour/ about half way down the page. Today is a coefficient 1.

    Each coefficient has a set of average speeds for the winner of the stage - with percentages listed for each
    http://www.letour.com/le-tour/2015/docs/TDF15_Reglement-BD.pdf

    Coefficient 1
    (étapes sans difficulté particulière)
    Il est accordé un délai d’arrivée établi sur le
    temps réel du vainqueur augmenté de :
    • 3 % si la moyenne kilométrique est inférieure
    ou égale à 36 km/h ;
    • 4 % au-delà de 36 km/h jusqu’à 38 km/h;
    • 5 % au-delà de 38 km/h jusqu’à 40 km/h;
    • 6 % au-delà de 40 km/h jusqu’à 42 km/h;
    • 7 % au-delà de 42 km/h jusqu’à 44 km/h;
    • 8 % au-delà de 44 km/h jusqu’à 46 km/h;
    • 9 % au-delà de 46 km/h jusqu’à 48 km/h;
    • 10 % au-delà de 48 km/h jusqu’à 50 km/h;
    • 11 % au-delà de 50 km/h.

    So you take the percentage that matches the average speed and multiply the winning time by that percentage and that is the extra time that will be allowed. The jury can waive these rules in special circumstances. I believe there is an extra rule for a large autobus but I am struggling to find it
