    The OP's argument fails as his point is buying something to suit your needs.

    This would then be reflected in the house, car, watch and clothes.

    Wealth simply provides more choice and most individuals who acquire wealth like to indulge the rewards of their endeavours with something better than basic.

    Mind you the counter argument has the reasoning of a pre pubescent individual who doesn't get out much

    There is a difference in a bike shop owner and someone who is paid a comission on sales.
    Bikeshop owners and business owners in general are more likely to be thinking of the big picture, i.e. the reputation of the business rather than an individual sale but that doesn't necessarily make them immune from trying to sell you more than you need.
