So since I missed most of this - is this being described as payback because Contador attacked when he didn't need to?

Or is there an element I am missing?

Gap to Landa/Amador/Aru group was around 1' 15" in the end

There was at least one crash I think, which Landa seemed to be caught up in. He was certainly off the back somewhere when Contador kicked things off.

A few km from the start of the climb something happened to Landa (not Aru though). Tinkoff were at the front but could have been anyway due to wanting to position Contador - very narrow entry and start to climb.

Kreuziger strung it out but after only a very short while Contador went solo (softly) which was about 47km from the finish.

Aru AWOL when he should have been near Contador and would have been great if he got a minute on Landa.

Landa had to chase for the first 5km or so of the climb before he joined Landa's group.

Never been my favourite, but cycling will be a sight duller after Bertie walks away.

    Ah, fair's fair.

Hopefully this illustrates to newcomers why the 'gentlemen's agreements' actually exist and it's not a moral thing - it's a fluid and self policing thing. You can ignore them, and sometimes it's worth it but don't expect to receive favours on the other side.

Valverde never does, and similarly he doesn't moan when rivals take advantage.

Contadors lead seem to be slipping then went up again at the end, if the timings are to be believed.
Hope he hasn't done an Hinault and regret it tomorrow.

Masterful display from Contador. Looking forward to him winning a stage the next few days.

It's somewhat encouraging to see that Astana seem to be fading towards the end of a three week grand tour

The winning margin of that race was only 46 seconds.

I am DEFINITELY taking the Giro 3 weeks off next year. Can't have this again, missing all this great racing.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

To clear up the confusion Anglo speakers seem to have about winning races and subsequent doping bans and retrospective win removals.

Armstrong won 7 Tours. He then had them taken away.

So he has gone through the process of winning, and so it is legitimate to say he has won them. Past tense.

He is not the winner of those 7 Tours however, since he has had those wins taken off him. Present tense.

Please understand that. Saying he did not win is stupid. I sat there for 21 weeks in front of the TV and watched him ride the entire course of all 7 Tours in a faster time than anyone else. He stood on the top step in Paris, received the jersey, and was proclaimed the winner.

    Same with Contador.

Sorry Rick, you can say you sat there for 21 weeks in front of the TV to watch him cheat in order to ride them in a faster time than anyone else.

The past tense you mention of 'won them' is the stupid thing here when we know cheating was involved and the win was taken away.

You see it one way, other people see it a different way. Cheating in sport is disgusting in principle to anyone with a basic set of morals, and when it happens it deserves absolutely zero positive recognition.

Personally, I think there is a big difference between the 2006 tour and the 2011 Giro. In one a rider turned up, won and was found to have done so using banned substances and therefore was disqualified. In the other, a rider with a valid licence turned up and won without any reasonable suspicion. Maybe in the future Contador will be re-instated as the 2011 winner, as he won it fair and square. Pretending a rider wasn't there really doesn't help anyone.

A sentence not best written in English. Added to which, by the standards I assume you are using, I'm no more an 'Anglo speaker' than you.

Either way, ff misses nary an opportunity to openly cast doping-related aspersions at anyone who finishes ahead of - or even threatens to finish ahead of - his favourite. Aside from the outright hypocrisy, in doing so he becomes an albatross round the neck of many a thread when he should be an asset. The Jose Rujano of cycling related bulletin boards, if you will. As long as he continues, I'm more than happy to take every opportunity to highlight that hypocrisy.

So perhaps you may wish to heed your own advice?
