i went for a cycle tonight. it was dark. i lost a cleat bolt. strava stopped recording my ride 4.5 minutes in. i did actually enjoy it though.
I waved at every car that passed me as they gave me a wide berth - 3 out of 12 of them flashed their indicators to acknowledge my wave.
    I might wave more often.

I also went out last night, but as I got 100 yards from home, a car pulled up next to me at the lights and wound the window down. The driver and I exchanged some words. It was my son with the grandkids. I turned around and went home. I didn't load it onto Strava, and I didn't loose any sleep over it.
I will try again tomorrow as its unlikely to happen again. I believe it was a "one off" incident.

I rode in to work this am. I had my lights on as did other cyclists and cars. Some of those cars exceeded the speed limit. I pedalled slow and I pedalled quickly and found like some of you that the quicker I pedalled the faster I went. I'll try this on the way home tonight as I believe it might be a common feature of cycling

Unlike the OP, I haven't gone out on my bike yesterday or today, as I have a virus replicating in the cells of my upper respiratory tract, which is causing slight discomfort and shortness of breath. This is somewhat disappointing, as the weather is most clement. Although, I did still have porridge for breakfast, but swapped the tea for a Lemsip.

I rode my bike this morning as a means of getting to work. I remembered a slight squeaking sound on a previous ride, so applied some teflon based lube before setting of. The ride went by uneventfully yet mildly pleasant. I arrived at work 5 minutes late but my boss didn't mind. I switched on my computer and logged the ride onto strava making sure i clicked "commute". I didn't give the ride a name and i didn't get any KOMs or PBs.

***Edit*** I have subsequently received a kudos for this cycle activity.

I cycled to the train station this morning. i didnt wear cycling clothes, just normal clothes and a helmet.
instead of a water bottle in my bottle cage I had a flask of coffee. it was nice.
  • I drove to work this morning. And as every morning cursed working too far away to cycle in, but at the same moment was thankful for a warm and dry car to sit in.

I've lived 15km from work for the last year. I've never commuted by bike. I'm a bad person.
Next month I'm starting a new job. The current plan is to commute about 95km each way. I'll probably use a car. :(
This driving will also gobble up more than an hour of my free time so it'll be harder to fit in training in the evenings. I still chose to see it as a positive change since they're going to pay me more. Hope I don't regret it!
  • Ouch, thats a big drive twice a day!

  • 95km is 60 miles. If it's free flowing motorway all the way you could do that in about an hour, otherwise it's going to be quite a bit more.

Thankfully it's almost entirely motorway (about 92km of the 95km) and I'll be going the opposite direction to the heavy commute traffic (I'll be travelling out from the city not into it). I wouldn't contemplate it otherwise. I have a choice between living near the job or near the city and my girlfriend. I'm tending towards the later. I estimate 55mins each way. A bit long but not horrific. I've known people driving 20km who take longer.
Sorry for the off topic. I'll go for a cycle later to compensate!
  • Down the motorway? Good chance of some KOM's of you get the drafting right.

  • One of the main factors apart from fuel is that you're doing 2,400 miles a month, so c. 28,000 miles per year - a bit less considering holidays. That's a lot of milage per year even if it is 'easy' milage.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Come on. Let's have some quality control, we don't want this thread ironically turning into the exact kind of verbal diarrhoea it was meant to counter. Please go 'do' your verbal diarrhoea on another thread if you're caught short and need to go.

Thanks to all the quality contributors :) you know who you are! Now, lets get back on track!

I went cycling earlier and it was raining, I had appropriate cycling clothing on which performed mostly successfully. There were other road users going about their business whilst I turned the pedals on my bike ride. I used a GPS bike computer which I turned on at the beginning of the ride and then turned off when I'd finished. My bike got somewhat dirty so I will wash it.

  • I was cycling earlier and both I and my bike moved over a distance under power generated by muscles (mostly in my legs it seemed) at a speed. I ate food before, during and after and yet I am still fat. Should I buy new wheels?
  • I went cycling yesterday and saw no stricken or stranded cyclists with mechanical defects therefore there was no requirement for me to stop and offer help from the extensive tool kit which I don't carry in an all consuming saddle bag which I don't have.

Further to this whilst on this ride I saw no accidents consequently there was no need for me to extract an Iphone 6 from a hermetically sealed sandwich bag to contact the emergency services.

I did meet other cyclists on this ride and cadence was discussed at length.
  • Dear Frank,

Great post I would be very interested to hear the frequency of your cadence conversations?
  • I commuted yesterday. It was the same route as the day before. It felt harder.

  • Dear Frank,

We averaged 90 words per minute, although it did vary dependant on the terrain and how fast we were talking.
  • I went out for a ride this morning, my wife came along, we rode on some roads, we did not have any arguments as we like to ride our bikes on roads, I spotted another cyclists who had a helmet camera, He was arguing with a car, I did not have a helmet camera so I did not argue with anybody or any cars, My wife also does not have a camera on her helmet, she did not argue with anybody either. We stopped off after 30 miles and had some cake, I had a vanilla slice it was tasty, My wife had a scone, I don't know if that was tasty as I did not taste it. we rode home, we might do the same tomorrow but I will have a different cake, maybe carrot cake, maybe some Dundee cake, I wont know until tomorrow.

I cycled 7 miles to work this morning, did my job, then cycled 12 miles home.
    The return journey took longer.
I had a helmet on and didn't die a horrible slow, agonising death.
I then took the dogs for a walk
Soon, I'll be having some kind of prawn stir fry, followed by chocolate cheese cake
  • I cycled with a club today. It is a nice club and very inclusive. No one was dropped. We were videod by a man in a van and told we would be posted on youtube! I have had something to eat and am posting on a forum about my experience.
  • My Bicycle is in another country in an attic and I did not ride it today. I wasn't sure if I should still put raisins on my porridge as it could effect the flow rate of my bowel. After my porridge and raisins I left the house to go to Morrison’s. Luckily I had remembered to use my (imaginary) wife’s leg shaver the previous night so my aerodynamic shape was not affected. I stepped up the pace to 7mph eager to shave 0.00000001 seconds off my KOM. I stopped in the bushes by the bus stop as the raisins were causing explosive diarrhea. Due to the nature of my bib shorts it was hard to crap. After my explosive crap I liberally applied Vaseline all over my private parts, noting several passer bys dialing 999. Through grimaced teeth I strode forth until bonking caused me to collapse on the pavement. Luckily I had five soreen loaves in my fanny pack and I managed to raise my blood sugar level such that I could crawl using my lips. It was hard.
  • I didn't go out for a ride today but I will tomorrow. I wont be wearing any undercrackers and will smear my buttocks with butter to avoid chaffing.
  • I went cycling yesterday. I cycled to my auntie in Forres. She keeps hens.
