Yeah, but don't forget Godwin had help too, he had a team of pros pacing him over the summer.
Only KS is using a recumbent. SA used one after his ankle was broken but it now seems that he's putting all his eggs in the new attempt that started last week.
He's into PBP now, having done 120 miles before the start yesterday. Amazing stuff!- - - - - - - - - -

Exactly. No recumbent but you can draft a team of pros pacing you all summer? Unless something happens to him, Kurt is going to break the record. He's down to around 200mpd needed, and is putting in 210-220 most days.
Steve I still have reservations about, I know he's still building up his fitness and miles but with a slower average speed than Kurt (mainly due to much more elevation per day) he's out on the road longer which means less recovery time. I hope I'm wrong though, if Steve does do it he's going to have done it pretty much the hardest way possible - on his own on a 'normal' bike.0 -
Team of pros you say ! Must admit I didn't know that - you are right that's not exactly how I'd imagined it.
These things are open for debate and whatever I think if Kurt breaks the record within the rules laid down he will be recognised by the general cycling public as the record holder - I just wish the rules had specified traditional upright bikes as once you allow recumbents it's going to be hard to attempt the record without one.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0 -

That's making the assumption that SA is not going to beat Kurt's record. Boooo hisss...
Mopeds aside, why can't he?seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
I think Steve has to seriously consider going somewhere warmer and flatter for the winter months or he's going to give his body too hard a time. He's made a few comments on YACF about having trouble recovering from the longer days. KS is moving around to search out the best conditions and really optimising his attempt, plus it's clear that he is a pretty formidable athlete to boot. SA's got his work cut out.- - - - - - - - - -

Sounds like Kurt Searvogel has had some health issues, might be taking a few days off (or more if it's serious)
Steve has been putting in some really big mileages!0 -
Got this years annual total and the 'concurrent' total (of 9504) but not the start and finish details of the 'new' record. Anyone got a link please? I'm not on facebook.

Just found this link. Thanks for posting. Has all the chatter about what he's doing, or not, on daily basis.0 -
Saw him yesterday on his way to Olney.
I waved. He wondered who I was.Insert bike here:0 -
I noticed he's started giving a daily rundown of his ride on strava which is a good idea Imo. Makes it a bit more interesting.0

Yup, just a title saying how he's gone today - I now know he's been dealing with some injury issues with his leg and hasn't been going as well as he hoped.
But more better than just "Morning Ride". The latest one is "I messed up a bit today. I was going to try for 200 miles and save my gammy leg but strayed too far from home and did 210. Oh well. Never mind..."
210 miles at 14.6mph - I mean, that's just - insane. Even as a one off nevermind every day!0 -
His heart rate readings are ridiculous also!0

Last day of riding for Steve should be 6th August (next year is a leap year)_____________________

I like how he's being descriptive with his Strava titles now. Like a blog in itself!0

Does make the mind boggle - 200 miles is something I don't know if I could achieve even as a one off - but every day?0 -

It is really great to read a little bit more from Steve (but not too much, he needs his rest!).
Despite some stomach issues and so on, he seems into a pretty good groove now and seems to be handling the poorer weather pretty well so far.
Allez Steve!0 -

I was just having a look at his/Kurt's Strava stats. At the rate he's going, Kurt will only just break the record (11,000 miles behind, with just under two months of riding left at an average of around 6000 per month.
He has been using everything available (recumbents, travelling around for the best weather, etc.), so I think it just reinforces how impressive Tommy's record is!0 -
Really great to see Steve last night.
It was the Audax UK reunion weekend and Steve arrived at about midnight to applause from those of us who stayed up to see him in.
Pretty much straight to bed for him. But then he was at breakfast and uploading strava etc. He seemed in great form, looks well (though thin!) and was happily chatting away with everyone.
He will have had a tough day today heading back South. I was heading back to London and, I am embarrassed to say, had a sense of humour failure after 105km of brutally strong headwind and jumped on a train! Steve doesn't have that option.
Great to have seen him. Let me see if I can pop a photo up.0 -

Absolutely right. Some of the current forecasts have him passing the Godwin record in the very last week.
That must be some incredible pressure to be under - one simple little mistake any time in the coming weeks and the record is unobtainable.0 -

A few quick words from Steve the weekend before last. Pretty rough edit, but some stuff on how things are going currently and some stuff on Steve's history (like turning up to the 24hr after having ridden the Crackpot 1000 a few days before! (the Crackpot is a legendarily tough 1000km in Wessex)).
Much of it shows how smart Steve can be in making the most of whatever the conditions throw at him. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of roads and weather patterns.
Tough miles at the moment!0 -
