Thanks guys, ive read all 18 pages of the original thread and I'm up to speed. I just need to scan the web for cheaper options than amazon.

I just clicked on that link and realised it was in Commuting

Does seem odd considering I'd assumed they are all fixie riding, bearded hipsters.

The chainstore BodyCare does 4 x Mach 3 blades for £6.29. Generally I've found 2 x 4 pcks from them cheaper than 1 x 8 from other stores (Bodycare only do 4 packs). Aldi do a cheap facsimile. Blades don't last as long but a lot cheaper - only fits their razor but still v.cheap. Also this

Still seems expensive when £6.25 gets you 100 Derby Extra blades for a double edge safety razor. Also end up chucking more away so worse for the environment!

Rapha already sells shaving cream. Just a matter of time before they launch out their own razor...if you can hang on 'til then...
  • I sometimes use the epilator on my face*.

    On a pain scale of 10, it's an 11.

    *not really.

I remember listening to a representative from Gillette on a radio program who'd been sent on to defend the pricing of their blade cartridges. He said they were so expensive because of all the R&D that goes into them in which case I'd have thought their R&D bods should be some of the highest paid people on the planet. And not good value either considering all they come up with is the idea of more blades. It really was like listening to a politician talk out of his backside, someone completely believing their own bs as he tried to justify the cost.

And for all that you still get a better shave with a 50 year old 'safety' razor and a better one still from a good old-fashioned straight razor!

I was wondering that, $750million dollars to design the Fusion? I've not used one but does anyone who has feel like it had that kind of resource put into? It smacks of some manufacturer telling me I need expensive carbon bearings in order to have a good bike ride.

Top tip is to shave in the evening as Corioriordan says. Then you won't rush and hopefully your eyes will be open.

Gave a brand new wilkinsons sword blade a chance tonight. Just not getting on with it. For some reason i am not feeling that it shaving that closely and nicks me a lot (that said I am feeling very smooth right now). Ordered a 30 pack of 7 oclocks and some of the sheep wool fat soap as recommended by UE in the Commuting chat thread. Hopefully that will work better. Generally I always cut in the same place, just under the jawline on the right side of my face.

Need to find a delicious post shave moisturiser. I had a "Jack Black" tester and it felt amazing. I have also used the Clarins one, which is also nice but pricey

I always shave in the evening as I don't like the bloody face look in the office, plus I don't look like a Mexican bandit half a day after shaving :)

Still don't understand what the fuss is about fancy shaving kit though. I've always used disposables, just as good as any overpriced flash stuff.

Yeah right, you use disposables because you're tight.

Considering double edged blades are about 15p a pop, it's probably cheaper

    15p!!! That's twice what I paid.
Intereseted to know how you get on with the wool fat stuff. I thought I'd read somewhere it struggled with hard water. UE has soft scottish water so he's alright.

    Razor about 50 years old
Brush over 50 but nearly worn down
    Just use ordinary soap
Current DE blade just coming up to 12 months use
Have sort-of goatee and moustache so not all face is shaved
    Usually don't shave on Sundays
If blade is beginning to drag, leave off shaving for week then leg wax one side and shave other - if shaving more painful, time to change blade

I get far too much of a 5o'clock shadow to be able to do shave the night before.

On the assumption that all this multiblade/vibrating/suspension/rotating head business is not 100% marketing, all these developments are correcting issues from the original design being so poor.

Our own fingers have knuckles for rotation/suspension. Did Gillette forget that? I use the below and get a much better shave than holding a handle 2-3 inches from my face and then trying to guide a blade around remotely.

    What blades fit the thing?

The blades that fit onto handles are expensive because you've 'bought into the system' (i.e., you've got the handle, which is useless without the specific blades) - cf Apple and their marketing ploys. Disposables are cheap because you're an unloyal purchaser, and will buy whatever's cheapest, so they have to grab your attention each time.

Gillette are taking us for fools if they think we are going to believe the R&D guff - it's simple: they charge what they can get away with, and that's got no relation with what they cost to produce.

I've got about half a dozen different handles as it was usually cheaper to buy a promotional offer of a razor and spare blades than a pack of blades. Surprised no one has admitted to using an electric (I do when in a rush but never feel like I've done a proper job).

I'll admit it. I use the electric to get through the thick stuff and then wet shave. I hate shaving but don't need to in my line of bizness. I only do it to keep the missus happy.
