Realised there's no way I'll be able to do Stage 8 on Saturday - I'm going to a Burns supper on the Friday night so there's no way I'll be in a fit state to do 2 and a half hours worth of hard turbo training!

Could push it to Sunday but then I don't fancy doing 2 hours of ISLAGIATT on Monday evening, and there's no way I'm doing 4.5 hours on Sunday either... Also if the weather's nice on Sunday I'll probably either go skiing or get my metric century for February out the way...
I've been thinking about this, as I'll struggle to do a stage on Friday.

First of all, I think you'll be too late on Monday evening to do Sunday's stage. It will close at noon on Monday.

The only way I've been able to come up with a workaround is to get ahead of the game this week. So, tonight I'll be doing two stages in a row, 9 Hammers followed directly by Angels (stages 4 & 5), then Local Hero on Wed (st 6), The Rookie on Thursday (st 7). Then Friday no ride, Sat and Sun as per the plan.

If you do the same (or similar), then you could maybe do Saturday's stage on Friday, giving you a rest day on Sat, Sunday as planned. No splitting stage 8 though, all three to be done straight after each other!

    Cheers,
    MarkP

There's no way I'll have time to do 2.5 hours on the turbo after work and before I have to be at the burns dinner. And even if I could there's no way I'd be able to stand up for the ceilidh afterwards!!

Thinking I'll probably have to bail soon anyway - I've only really been doing structured turbo training since Christmas (when I got a Garmin with hr and so forth) I've probably bitten off more than I can chew. Nine Hammers (which I've done twice before today) was just a lactate fest, I couldn't bring my heart rate up to where I know it should be because my legs were burning too much.
  • Just finished Angels. I feel wasted. I'm away with work tomorrow and Friday, so unless I do Local Hero tonight (doubtful, the way I am currently feeling), its looking like I'll be out. Shame, I was enjoyed it, in a warped kind of way!

That's a shame after getting this far. If on TR you could always turn the effort down a bit and cruise through it to keep you in the game?

Local Hero was quite tough, 1hr and 25 and my legs certainly know it sitting here writing this...
  • Just did Local Hero. First time I've done it and definitely felt it!! Those last sprints nearly finished me off!! Only the Rookie away from the dreaded stage 8 now!!

Came back round a bit for Angels, I seem to be alternating from really bad to really good sessions!
  • I'm out Friday night and got a full day sat and out in the evening so just realised I'm going to have to get up at 5.30ish to make sure I can get stage 8 done before my sons rugby class at 9.30!! Bloody hell!

I found Local Hero really tough tonight as well.
Boardman Road Comp - OK, I went to Halfords
Tibia plateau fracture - the rehab continues!

At 100% MarkP? I started out the warm up and 1st interval at 90% then increased it by 1% per interval and finished the last 2 at 100. Tough workout but felt OK during the time.

Was thinking of taking a break Friday but then remembered 8DoC last year when I took a day out and really suffered when back on it. Am thinking along the lines of having an easy spin session for 30 to 40 minutes just to keep the momentum going :D

Stage 7 complete, 2 more to go :)
  • Stage 7 done. Have to say I quite enjoyed the rookie. Video was great. Rest day tomorrow and then the dreaded triple header.

Hope you are all going well. Nearly there!

Never done local hero before, quite enjoyed it in a perverse way! Didn't have much in the tank for the sprints though.

I'm out now - made the executive decision to do my regular Friday lunchtime (normally do it every Friday with a few colleagues), rather than rush home after work before the burns thing. And no idea when I could have done Saturdays anyway.

    Good luck!!

Take a rest day... but be aware that the day after will be not good.. I'm of the opinion if you can keep it going then do so.. remember that even on rest days in GTs, riders still ride! They cannot afford the body to switch off.

I know but it is an enforced rest day as I'm in work early and straight out afterwards so won't have any chance at all. I may try and go for a run or something at lunchtime if I can to keep the legs going!

My rest day too but am still getting on the turbo for 30 to 40 minutes of spinning to keep the leg muscles active

Did our regular Friday 6km lunch run, 4:56/km which isn't bad but my legs felt like blocks of dead wood!

I've just done "Dans" on TR, 30 minutes of light spinning bliss :) Blooming HR has failed so need to find my spare one and get that paired up ready for 10am!!

Stage 8 done.. but had to turn things right down and jump on the rollers for a change.
  • Done them all at 100% FTP - rest day today and planning on 90% for Stage 8. All 3 videos one after the other with just enough time for setup the laptop/TR and have a pee if needed.

Been a good week for it weatherwise - no intention of getting out of teh house in this stuff anyway

Can we be rude and ask how far down % wise?

Down to 80% and then still hard put to rev it up... major fatigue syndrome but actually feeling 110%.. but no zip.
Also using the rollers is damn hard to spin up over 110 and still keeping it pointing forward.
Using Golden Cheetah I can see I have already created nearly 9 points in my Chronic Training Load... thats why I like this micro training block at this time of the year. Although the racing doesnt start until late March there are some seriously heated reliability rides to do before then.

I enjoy this block training too but someone in my club has said its wrong to do this type of strenuous training so early in the year. He said just go out and get base miles in and don't pressure the heart/legs too much. I didn't agree with him as every effort you put in now as long as you you take enough recovery days I can only see you/me/us getting better.
I take my hat off to roller users as I bought a set before my KK turbo but just couldnt get on with them.
I will probably start out at 90% for Revolver then see how I go after that. I have never done any of the Sufferfest videos and only use TR, will be a different experience with all the small sprints, any advice?

Well there are so many differing opinions about what to do and when... you are seriously best off finding out what works for you and you alone. My base is always from October to December .. consistent.. not a day missed.
As far as I am concerned if you are still base working into Feb/March it is too late... but then my race season starts early....
The intervals are so short you really do have to clock watch. Violator has near as dammit 200% overs... I can't do that even if I was just sprinting once -- well almost you get the drift... tbh I dont need to .. my strengths in racing are elsewhere... not getting involved in crashfest sprints is one of them.
  • Wow! Ended up getting in earlier than expected so thought I'd get stage 8 done and dusted! Bloody hell that was tough! Half is easy at the end was just brutal!! Kept my FTP at 100% which was probably a mistake as I'm conpletely wrecked now!! Oh well only one more to go!!

No chance I could manage the 3 at 100%. Started off Revolver at 100 then after 3 sprints had to start knocking it back, first to 95 then 90. Violator done at 90% but I was really fading. Half is Easy was done at 80% and now my legs are shot.

Pleased that's over till tomorrow, now where is the food cupboard!!!
  • Did all 3 of Stage 8 at 90% with no real problems. I found it impossible to manage the 5 second sprints and go from 96 to 368 watts in 5 seconds but I did my best.

My real problem was dehydration all day afterwards. Sick, banging headache, did not eat until 6 hours after the ride so I only had breakfast all day long.

Stil dont feel brilliant today so I will go at 90% again for Stage 9
  • Finished! Bloody hell what a week! I actually felt good today, but I'm suited more to longer sustained efforts like ISLAGIATT whereas stage 8 was just crazy!!

Well done to everyone who has finished and good luck anyone doing it today!

Best thing for me is I've never really done proper turbo training and only signed up to TR to do this but hooked on TR now, have been pretty impressed with it.
Not sure I'm going near the turbo for a few days now though! ;)

Im done, all 9 stages :)

Stage 9 was at 90% though and nailed the final sprint with everything I had left and got myself a few little TR best medals.

Total TSS for my 9 stages was 948 with calories burnt coming in at 8847, time for pie!!! :D

    That's me done too :)

After yesterdays horrible stage I actually quite enjoyed todays 2 hours in the saddle!

TR is awesome though - I'd never have kept up the intensity if I was just watching the videos but somehow just seeing those numbers on the screen keeps you on the ball!

Me finished as well - total miles 203 - TS 980
Trainer Road is fantastic. It has really got me into the turbo trainer this year.

I am pretty tired now though. My idea over the next 2 weeks is to redo all of the 8 new workouts that I did in ToS and get better numbers for each of them, which should be possible if doing them standalone
