All very interesting but I thought a semi was something else entirely.

Right. The 1x is to give you more ground clearance and the addition of 11 speed rear cassettes, has made twin chain rings for some uses redundant.

On the road, most 'standard' chainsets have 39 inner and 53 on the outer. Not the best if you do a lot of hills. Previously, the option was a 'compact' - 34 or 36 inner c'ring and 50 outer.
The modern trend in road cycling is higher cadence.
'Semi's' are in between because there is a limit on the size (reduction) of teeth on a 'standard' as it's not physically possible to go lower than 38/51.
But... Compacts can accommodate c'rings right up to... whatever you like. So, my argument is, 'Why have semi's'? Why can't bike sellers put whatever c'ring combo on your bike using a compact 110 bcd as a starting point. 110 is the distance between the chain ring bolt apertures.

Tbh I don't change gear much non the Panzer :)

Oddly the Communter is a something half way between a compact and a semi - 50/36. Don't really use the small ring on the way in unless I fancy a bit of spinning on the Col De Crystal Palace climb.

    Evenin' All,

Wouldn't mind going to bed but Stropteen is due back here at midnight after her Slovakia jaunt. The hound will go mad as well. May be tired tomorrow.
