There are so many bikes that could be built for £5 or less. I am not entirley clear what you want the bike for. Disc brake bikes are worth a serious look as it will be different to what you have.

Deda Ran is now a very light disc brake frame and fork available for custom builds if you want a more race orientated bike. 810g for the medium frame according to the chcickens rep who was in today. The ran can also be had with caliper brakes and deda bikes are no common.

One of these really appeals to me. Can I really justify a no 13 (as no 11 and 12 are already sheduled for building).

  • Hey cycleclinic.

As I wrote in my first post, I am friends with a custom frame builder and am on his list to have a fully custom bike built but the wait is a long one. I fancy a high spec carbon machine that has some nice gear on it to be used on dry days to keep maintenance costs down. I have a budget of up to 5k to play with and this post was to see what others would do in my situation.

I love my Krypton and use it whatever the weather all year round. I don't have a turbo and I mainly ride on my own due to shift patterns and I don't race. I am purely indulging in my passion for bikes as you clearly have too, owning 12!

I really meant is for racing i.e you need a proper race postion on it or is for club runs, long duistance rides e.t.c which may lend itself to a more comfort orientated position. Of course if you are flexible enough a low down race postion can be quite comfortable. However you have answered it you don't race. The thing I would do is look at the postion you currently have on your bikes. I assume it is broadly the same and look at the geometry of the new frame and see if it can be replicated.

The Deda Ran is a carbon frame+ fork but frame and fork only so the shop has to build it. So it is off the shelf in a short of way. Frame RRP is £1900 leaving a fair bit for kit.

Genesis also have a good carbon frame and fork only and stock builds with it. The Genesis Zero. To top spec team bike is under £5 and it is a team bike.

Regardless of the bike they have to fit properly.

Seeing as you are geeting a custom frame the Genesis Volare is therefore pointless that is going to be number 11 and number 12 will be a single speed MTB 29er race bike for those muddy races.

What about a Look 695 Light

Askiums on a 5 grand bike ? I'd expect at least around £1000 of the budget to go on the wheels, not £150. :o

Merlin are selling off these ex-team bikes at under £3K with Campag Record EPS and a Zonda wheelset. Would retail at £6.5K

LOL one careful owner?!?!?!? I wouldn't go near an ex-pro bike, they'll have been thrashed!!!!!

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Road bikes are all about minimalism, kinda.
Black makes them seem even more minimalist.

    Just a theory

If in a parallel Universe I was to spend around 5k on a carbon road bike it would probably be the aforementioned Look or this: http://www.storck-bicycle.cc/road-bikes ... tinum-2015 or one of the other Storcks.

if i was spending 5k one one bike i think it would have to be a custom build. other thing i don't think i would race on a bike at that value but i quess it depends on our own financial situations! on a general note id probably use the 5k to buy a nice 1k winter bike, spend roughy 3k on a nice bike with some really nice wheels. that still leaves a grand! not sure what id spend that on, maybe sme nice new apparel

It's the socialist approach...being totally stealth (black bike, black helmet, black kit and no lights) fits the weather here perfectly and reduces the chance of drivers honking or slowing/ stopping before the hit you. That way you can potentially skip the hospital part and save the NHS some costs....

Honestly, you have to ask? Black's more slimming than any other colour. And it goes with anything. I know this, Gok Wan told me.

  • I quite like the Basso. Do they have anything to do with Ivan Basso? I seem to recall that he had something to do with them....guessing they are his name on an oem style frame?

Nothing... I think the owner is related to Marino Basso, who won the Worlds a few years back... his win is quite famous, due to the heart condition that almost stopped Franco Bitossi in dramatic fashion on the finish line... worth a watch on youtube

I'm not sure you can buy a Legend for 5 grand.

The ex team bikes sound like a good deal. Another one to the list of potentials and it has a bit of a story behind it too.

You can get a 7.5 frame and forks for £3200. add Campagnolo Chorus, some Deda Zero 100 bars/stem and then a grand on wheels. Comes with a bike fit and custom paint as standard. You'd get some jealous looks on one of those - and a pretty amazing ride too! It beats a Cervelo, Canyon, Trek, Spec hands down.

Westbrook Cycles are knocking out BMC Team Machine SLR01 frames with the 6870 electronic kit for a bargain £1800. Get some ultra trick brakes and cranks, carbon stem, bars, saddle, some top end wheels and you've got yourself an absolute superbike.

Argon 18 gets my vote anytime, miles better than a bloody trek, any model imo. Basso not so hot either.

Beg to differ, but each to their own. The frameset is also being offered at £1199.

No one seems to have mentioned the Focus Izalco Max. I have one and it is a stunning bike. Light, stiff, comfortable. I had a Canyon Ultimate SLX and the Focus is miłes better in my opinion.

get a custom frame made and fitted with a decent gruppo. rather than an off the shelf carbon copy of a race machine get yourself down to a custom builder and get every speced out for the type of riding that you want to do.

    Why?

I think "custom built", is almost as much of a marketing nonsense as everything else out there.

Sure, back in the day custom might have offered huge advantages over small choices in frame sizes, but these days there's enough frame geometry choice amongst brands that' 99.9% of riders will be perfectly fine with.

At the OPs price range, he'd be looking more at the Izalco Max, which by all accounts is a stunning frame.

Sorry, that's what I meant. I'll go back and edit it. For some reason I cannot get it to stick in my head that it's the Max not the Pro. I only needed to look over my shoulder to check as well.

At some point I'll write a review of it as there's so little info and reviews on line compared to similar frames, but just to reiterate - it is a ridiculously good bike.

I'd defo be interested to hear your thoughts on your Max. I love my own Focus, although it's 'only' a Cayo.
