It just reflects the selfish egotistical nature of the city really.0

I'd be in favour of cyclists having 'registrations' AND insurance (I know some already do!) - making them more accountable for their actions.
Yep, brilliant idea; that scheme works so well with motorists.0 -
I was cycling in Richmond Park the other day and overheard a conversation between two fellows outside Pembroke Lodge cafe, I could not believe my ears as they were complaining about the hills in the park being quite tough. What hills in the park? Are these the same folk that think Box Hill is the English equivalent to the Alp d'Huez?Big Red, Blue, Pete, Bill & Doug0

To be fair, I often whinge about the hills when I am in there - especially if I am doing clockwise laps on a longer fixed gear and by about the 4th lap things are going a bit blurry.0 -

It's only about 300m over 4 laps????Big Red, Blue, Pete, Bill & Doug0 -

I'm only a little lad (59Kg) and hauling a 78 inch (about as tall as I go) up Broomfield is pretty tough after a few laps. Fine if I am on my usual 67, but then I half kill myself on the flats, so I am usually on the taller gear, though I rarely do clockwise laps.0 -

Great idea, as long as I can draft behind you all the way round !!!
I use the park a fair bit too, but do my utmost to miss the busy times. There's no easy answer to solve the pedestrian/cyclist/motorist tensions, all three groups have a right to use the park and need to find a way to co-exist.0 -
What is richmond park? it sounds like cycling hell :shock:0

Richmond Park. Box Hill.

I ride in Richmond Park about three times a week, and I've never stopped for a rest yet.
I notice all you wusses go round anti-clockwise though. Soft, I tellya, you're all soft...Is the gorilla tired yet?0 -

Yeah and those people live in London0 -
I ride in RP daily and at weekends and agree with the OP that it is getting worse during peak times, flying laps and chain gangs should be early or late.
Over the summer almost every weekend I saw an ambulance come into the park, usually either on the zig-zag or on the stretch from Robin Hood to Roehampton gate (narrow lane for over taking, I was almost wiped on Saturday (although car driver did raise his hand in apology so felt much better:))
Would be interested to go to a meeting about it..anyone got details?0 -
A delicious irony bout this thread being full of people complaining about too many people cycling around RP as it ruins their enjoyment of cycling around RP, including a chap who drives there!!!!
The number of people will have a natural limiting effect. For me the problem is behaviour of cyclists in particular Dynamos using it as a training track and as for doing so through the middle it defied belief.
As has been suggested the solution is to get up earlier as in the mornings it is truly beautiful.0 -
kingtubby wrote:Would be interested to go to a meeting about it..anyone got details?I wanted to let you know about an important public meeting I am arranging for Wednesday, December 17th, at the Duke St Church in Richmond. The topic will be cycling - and in particular the rising tensions between cyclists, motorists and pedestrians in Richmond Park.
It will be an open forum, and the purpose is simply to explore solutions to a problem that is raised with me by constituents on a near daily basis. I hope that by crowd-sourcing the problem, interesting and valuable solutions will be offered up, and to that end, I warmly invite you to come along and contribute.
I will chair the meeting, and have assembled a panel of representatives from Richmond and Kingston Councils, the Royal parks, and the police.
Event details:
Date: Wednesday 17th December - 7:30pm
Location: Duke Street Church, Quadrant Rd (off the Green), Richmond, TW9 1DH
I very much hope to see you there,
Best wishes,
Zac Goldsmith
MP for Richmond Park and North Kingston0 -
Thanks, will attend0

It was I who drove there on this occasion, I live in the Chilterns, so could have ridden there or even taken the train, but as I was meeting friends and we were then going on elsewhere afterwards and parking is free, why shouldn't I?
Yet another cyclist who gets upset with someone driving - now just what is that all about?Big Red, Blue, Pete, Bill & Doug0 -

As the OP I'd suggest that you re-read what I said. It was nothing to do with the volume of people, although that was a surprise - it was the awful behaviour of most of them!Trail fun - Transition Bandit
Road - Wilier Izoard Centaur/Cube Agree C62 Disc
Allround - Cotic Solaris0 -

I disagree - the main problem is the sheer volume of people who will be faster or slower than you so you get in their way or they get in yours so making it annoying and dangerous.0 -

you would have to agree that as a general rule driving to RP for a bike ride is bizarre - they can't all have your exceptional circumstances0 -
I can't be the only one who hasn't had any problems with drivers or other cyclists in RP?
I get that it's busier on a weekend and it's annoying when drivers don't signal at the roundabouts, but other than that...0 -

Well, I don't really agree. Driving anywhere for a ride is perfectly acceptable, otherwise my riding area would be severely restricted. I don't really have a problem with it - plenty people I know have driven to the massive mountain of Box Hill because the sheer effort of climbing such a behemoth would render them useless to cycle anywhere once they've hit the summit.Big Red, Blue, Pete, Bill & Doug0 -
If you drove to the middle of nowhere to tackle a beast such as Box Hill then I understand but we are people travelling by car and bike to cycle around an urban park and then being disappointed to find it overcrowded.
You should go at night it is closed to traffic (you have to park outside) so you will only encounter other cyclists some with no lights and some with lights so bright they blind you for 5 mins. Oh and ninjas come from far and wide to run, walk the dog and in extreme cases ski, but all wear very dark clothing.0 -
^ don't forget the massive 4-legged lumps of meat with antlers - they can make things fun in the dark!0
