  • Love him or hate him that podium rounds off an impressive season for Valverde. He has been in the mix right from the start of the year.

    Gilbert's quite classy isn't he?
  • Gilbert's quite classy isn't he?

He was possibly the rider with the most class but this year I don't think you can say that at all.

Mean more in terms of his efforts for GvA today.

He didn't even finish...Swift had to do everything himself to place where he did. PK even finished (6 mins down) despite going on the attack.

Thoroughly shameful year from a performance perspective from Mr Millar.

Yeah I suppose so. I was surprised by that. It was however planned pre-event:

The Worlds is probably in the top 5 single day races of the year for me.

So which of the monuments don't you put in your top 5? ;)

Milan-San Remo I s'pose. You have to watch it and get into it because it's the first monument of the season. But as a race it's not usually exciting.

Can't agree. L-B-L is teetering on the edge for me.
No, it's Lombardy. It's just at the wrong point of the season.

Lombardy would be my second choice but I personally like it and I like that it has this identity of the "race of the falling leaves".

Will be interesting to see whether some more big names head to the ToB next year
  • What a great way to win the stripes. So much nicer to have an attacker in the jersey all next year rather than one of those other parasites who latch on to whatever host tows them to the line

Great race by Little Pete. He was full of riding, hopefully he'll get more chances to shine next season

  • I think he will. Defining year this one for him - turning into a proper road racer rather than a BC funded trackie who rides on the road for training.

  • Categorically a case of one season too far for Millar. I don't mind the guy and even read his book but I'd rather paint my garage floor and watch it dry than watch a film on that last season, could run a highlights reel of it in 5 seconds.

Hard to argue with that, in fairness
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Can't argue with that... a good result.

    Terrible race, good win though.
  • Great ride, great to see a real young star wearing the rainbow jersey... somehow reminds me of Boonen, who also won young and backed it up with many great wins... and glad it's no longer on the shoulders of that hopeless clown...

Apparently the reason for staying another year was so that his son would be old enough to remember him as a pro cyclist

Kiwa needs some better fitting shorts...
He wears them a little long but these are just wrong:

Which hopeless clown would that be?
I know you can't mean Costa because only an idiot would call someone who is sixth in the World rankings a clown.
To think someone who won the Tour of Switzerland and was on the podium of Paris-Nice, Romandie and GP Montreal is a hopeless clown would be really ignorant.
And you're neither an idiot or ignorant. So who is this hopeless clown?

Hopeless clown who's currently got more CQ points than Kittel, Cancellera, Aru etc :P

    Sort it out Kiwa.

  • If Rui Costa is a worthy rainbow jersey wearer, then certainly even Visconti could be one... over the years a few mediocre riders managed to win the Worlds, most notably Brochard... I would always like to see the best winning the Worlds, but occasionally we do get a rat... Rui Costa is one of them. Three Tour de Suisse are hardly impressive, even Cancellara won the Tour de Suisse, which says a lot about how selective a stage race it is... he might have a lot of UCI points, but points mean nothing and in 2014 he had a pretty grey season by all accounts and before then he was hardly a world beater...
The problem is that when you tune yourself to consider Millar (or Gareth Thomas) a great rider, then anybody is a great rider...

So Costa won the worlds last year. And he was ranked 7 in CQ rankings.

Same as the guy who won today.

The problem with your argument is the numbers disagree with it. Last year, Costa won 2 TdF stages and the Tour de Suisse. This year Kwai won Strade Bianchi, a couple of TT's and a stage in a chipper. They're both very good riders.

He's still only 27. He's won three Tours de Suisse, three Tour de France stages, GP Montreal, Four Days of Dunkirk, and had seven other podiums at World Tour level. He's not the chump you think he is

Gareth Thomas is a crap rider. Great rugby player though.

One now rides for Lampre, so he was obviously never going to win anything.
