It's depressingly cynical. Fortunately, for the Campag user there are still plenty of current and less recent chainsets around NOS so hopefully people undertaking their own builds won't be forced into this for a while. And then there was my friends smart new Cannondale Supersix HiMod full of shiny Dura Ace - except for the chainset which was a much nicer looking (in my eyes) Cannondale branded one with standard looking rings. That's the way to do it!

I do love the look of the high end Campy cranksets. The lovely 'holographic' carbon crank arms and the beautifully machined minimalistic chainrings. They are a thing of beauty.

In fact they look pretty much the same as my Force crankset, which cost a fraction on the price of the Campag equivalent.

I actually went with a SRAM chainset on my otherwise Campag build...

Looks nice - and doesn't even have any red on it. You could make a good case to say that that crankset looks better than the Campag ones.

Nice, simple, elegant, understated...just how components should be.

The new chainsets are one of the worst looking things ever. I think the Shimano 4 arm ones look fab because they metallic in nature - the campag carbon just doesn't work.

    I'm for the opposite.....

Rode Dura ace all my life but 95% certain of switching to Campag because I think the DA chainset is f-ugly and Campag have made the 4 arm stylish with shape and Carbon fibre!!

Ideal mix would be Record group with Chorus brakes, chain and cassette :P :P :P

  • In terms of truly ugly, though, the rotor chainsets take some beating. How not to do graphics.

Maybe, in the end, 4 arm cranks are a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Other than the manufacturers problem of how to sell new gear as often as possible.

I agree..... Forgot about Rotor because I simply hate looking at them :x

Don't get what they're about , just looks like another alloy chainset with ugly graphics to me :? :? :?

  • It's not that bad looking as a raw component, it's just a shame they have the graphic design of an eighties power metal album.

The most cycnical manufacturer has to be Campag though (and I have campag on all my bikes, even my TT bike). Three examples spring to mind:

    1. My Veloce chainset with one arm at a fractionally different BCD to the others to prevent any aftermarket ring supply (even though Campag don't sell replacement rings at viable prices)

    2. The stupid chain pins requiring a £150 chain tool

    3. Powertorque requiring another hideously expensive tool

All of these are self defeating and just piss people off, it's no wonder 95% of cyclists use Shimano. I bet they don't make anything on the stupid tools by comparison to what they lose in people giving up on them. Shimano does loads of stupid stuff too, but at least 4 arm chainsets seem to be part and parcel of the hollow chainring design which apparently is effective.

If only the energy and creativity went into actual improvements in design rather than attempting to block out competition

    Somegreat info on Campag/Shimano. Thanks!!

Looking at the comments, and prices involved, more so with the tool needed for Campag, or the cost of getting the LBS to fit the crank, and the initial cost of the Campag gearing will be to expensive for me.

So Ultegra is on the list, I think I shall keep the Tiagra crankset (fitted with FSA Pro Road chainring) the Ultegra crankset doesn't save any big weight (50g)?
