Obviously each to their own on the wheels.

For me, they came in at a cracking price and as a stop gap to me having 10sp cassette it's a good compromise. I do plan to build a retro look wheelset but as yet undecided on the choice of components.

Get Harry Rowland to build you some Ambrosio Excellight rims on silver Novatec hubs and stick some Challenge gum walls on them. Not that I'm biased! The Excellight come in either black or silver, or you could go with Excellence which are even more old-school box-section, although I think the Excellight look classic enough. Actually if I was getting another pair of classic-looking but modern wheels built now I might consider the H+S TB14 which look the part and get good reviews.

n.b. The hubs have had the modern skewers (internal cam) taken out and replaced with old-school Campag ones (external cam), which work better with the horizontal drop-outs of your classic steel frame.
  • But it doesnt have the same beauty. I did say that it won't be the purists cup of tea. I'm a huge fan of period incorrect builds & what better frame to use? Imo at least it is getting a new lease of life than just rusting away in someones garage.

The old wheels are now in Ireland being fitted to a period correct Raleigh ;)

The ambrosio build is exactly what I want.

They were in fact nuovo hubs not chorus as first thought. 126mm spacing.

10speed is fitted and now working great after adjusting the limit screws on thr derailleur.

It works if you leave the friction shifters

  • I think i have found a saddle that will suit it nicely.

    San marco regal in brown.

    Thoughts?
  • I picked up a pair of 3ttt ergo power due bars off ebay for a great price. same as these.

  • IME experience the Regal is pretty fat like the Rolls. It might not agree with your personal geometry.

The Concor is another classic but it's fore-aft profile is very curved to the extent it can feel like it's knifing right up your you-know-what. I hated mine.

Reydel used to make very good-looking saddles (Sean K was a fan) but good luck finding one.

Flites have been around since the late 80s so an original grey one would not frustrate the purists. In the 90s they featured a lot of fancy embroidery writing such as "il pirate" and stuff like that. Was like a cheese grater on your shorts but hey ho, thus was the fashion.

I love the aesthetics of the Flite but tried one for size recently and it caused some soreness in the sit bones. A little too narrow in the mid section maybe. On the other hand the Concor's also a beaut and I find it extremely comfortable. The fore-aft profile may not be ideal for some (e.g. it doesn't offer quite the same ability to slide for/aft as something flatter like an Arione, which I have on the other bike) but for me does offer a very comfy, stable position which is fine for long rides. I've not tried the Regal but did use both Rolls and Turbo BITD, which I thought were adequate at the time but with hindsight were both a bit "fat" and had me sliding about a bit too much.

So basically, yeah - some lovely classic saddles out there but they're quite different shapes, so worth trying out a few for size if you intend doing any serious mileage on the bike.
  • Thanks for your input guys. We're moving house in the next couple of weeks, once moved I will be stripping it down & dropping in at Rourkes in Stoke for her new paint :)

Dropped my frame off at Brian Rourkes this morning.

Some of kit they've got in there makes me stupidly jealous. Sean Kelly' 953 Rourke was incredible, so light and the attention to detail on the frames is second to none.

The colour i picked seemed to be a good match for the Gios, just got to wait 4-6 weeks now.

    Token pic of Sean' 953

I have been purchasing while i'm awaiting the call to say I can collect the frame, a mix of new & used parts

Campagnolo Veloce ultra-torque compact chainset (Polished)
Campagnolo Veloce Front & Rear deraillures (Polished)
    Campagnolo Centaur carbon levers
    Cable kit

Just need to buy the ultra-torque BB & some gum wall tyres.

Unfortunately Marco is unable to confirm the original colour. He said it should have been blue but could have been black, red or white.

I keep thinking about Gios blue but I'm just not keen on the shade of blue it is.

It's the ONLY shade of blue and it is awesome... I have seen some lovely white ones with blue bands, but ultimately a Gios is blue... like a Ducati is red and a Ferrari is red and anyone with a non red ferrari... well, you know what I mean...

With all due respect, certain Ferraris look utter cack in red. The 458, IMHO, looks ace in black or grey but not so good in red.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

And then classic Ferraris like a 250SWB in Ecurie Ecosse blue is a sight to behold. And if you must inflict a GTO on me, I'll have it in BRP green.

Anyone with a non red Ferrari is someone who makes their own decisions and doesn't need anyone else to make them for them.
    Faster than a tent.......
  • Love it. Definitely needs Campag, though. ;)

As above, i've now ordered the bottom bracket. I really can't wait to get it back from being painted. I'm like a small child with the anticipation of Christmas.

I can pick my frame up from Tuesday, they've just got to chase the threads through with a tap. I'll probably head over to collect it on Saturday.

I can't believe how good a match one of their standard colours is for the Gios blue.

Got my veloflex' mounted this evening.

Shes back with me now. The next update should be a fully built gios. Cost a little more than I expected but the quality is unbelievable.

Judging by the literature on his table, I think he's working on the sideburns...

Beautiful paint job, still a mistake to use modern componentry... as you can see now you can't enter the Eroica, which is a shame of course... although you can probably fit a pair of down tube shifters, cheap brake levers and some cage pedals for the day... it only takes a couple of hours work to make it acceptably "retro"

Indeed it does suck but hey I'll have a reliable bike for the other 364 days of the year.

To be honest I don't think I'd ride l'eroica anyway.

New wheels will be built once ive decided on hubs though.

There is a circuit of events for period bicycles... I've done the three biggest ones and they are all amazing events, worth having a period bike for: Eroica in Tuscany, Retroronde in the Flanders and the Anjou Velo Vintage in the Loire Valley are absolutely stunning events... I plan to do the Eroica Britannia at some stage, although in pure UK fashion is oversubscribed and grossly overpriced... more a corporate affair than a retro bicycle lovers gathering

Well here she is. I still have a bit of fettling to do (need a reducing ferrule for the gear cable) & possibly need to shim the bars as they're still slipping. I also need to cut the rear brake bolt down a tad which I'll do tomorrow. I will get some better photos tomorrow in the daylight.

Hah, I sold the Rolls I had because it wasn't comfortable. I'm keeping my eyes out for a regal though.

I have a black Regal with Ti rails if it's of interest? PM me if it is.

Personally though, I think that bike would look better with a white saddle and bar tape.
