If you want a fun car, actually get a car that isn't boring.

    for example?

Would a 270bhp 5 series with sequential turbos and rear wheel drive be boring?
It needs to be a practical family car, not too thirsty and interesting to drive.

Cant see the difference between Briggo's Fag Waggon and the 911 you posted Andy.

I actually miss my old Pro 2s for that very reason. Mavic hubs are far too quiet! :D

A 911 is my dream car but it has to be air cooled, rear wheel drive and a turbo. Or if I ever get rich, a Carrera Clubsport in white and red.
Unfortunately, Porshes don't really fit in with my needs.

I always wanted a 1971 911 2.4 Targa and a modern 911 Turbo. I have a rusty piece of shit Mazda Protege 5. Life isn't going the way I planned.

My mate has a petrol BMW 330 estate from 2001 or so - its pretty quick, in good shape and actually not to bad for maintenance as long as you can do easy stuff yourself. Audi's the age range you'd be looking at will be tattier than equivelant BMW's I reckon. I don't like Mercs.

I'd be inclined to look at newer VW golfs with a nice big engine though.

My last two cars were VW's. They both had loads of problems and every time I took it in for repair the mechanic told me it was a common fault.
Why would you want a 911 targa? The hardtops are much better cars and far better looking.

Fairly sure that you can apply that to pretty much any car!

I had a drive in a Saab 9-5 aero HOT that a mate is selling thinking it would be fast and practical. It was crap! How can a 260bhp car feel barely and quicker than my 180bhp diesel mondeo? It handles really badly, the last time I experienced body roll the that I had a life jacket on and a fishing rod on a rough day off the Dorset coast.

i cant help but notice that none of you have recommended anything with pop up head lights. What is wrong with you lot!?

the best car, and i do mean BEST, is a bmw 8 series. true fact (ish)

iirc, you need a big thumb for one of those.

I do like the 850i but they are now an appreciating classic now. Bit on the thirsty side as well.
I have found that I can get a 200bhp remap on my mondeo for not a lot of money so that could be worth a bash.

When I bought my latest car I wanted anything but a BMW, guess what I ended up with, in base trim it wasn't as nice to drive as a Mondeo, but had a better interior, but I got the Msport and it really does liven up the ride.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Naturally anyone with any brain cells stays away from a VW!

I was told VW was the one to go for and Vauxhall and Fiat were the ones to avoid!

I think the true advice would be to give up on cars, and ride a bike. That's just silly talk though

I'd get a VW before a Vauxhall and I wouldn't even look at a Fiat unless it was parked on my face.

Vauxhalls are cheap and nasty. Some of the newer VWs aren't made in Germany and quality is not as good, I think the newer Passats are made in Hungary and aren't as nicely put together as older ones.

I have a Fiat, and it'd probably look better parked up on my face

I'd never buy a car again based on the fact I can get my bike inside easily, might as well go the full hog, get a van and be done with it.

Westfield kit-car with a generic Ford zetec engine and a towbar so you can drop a rack on the back. Economical, fun and more in keeping with the adventurous lifestyle riding a bike leads people to believe you have. Won't get hit for tax soon either....

I think I might have done something a bit silly. While a little tired and emotional (drunk) last night I put a bid on a Mercedes E430 on ebay. I hope someone bids higher! It looks very nice but I'm not sure I want a 4.3 v8!

I have a 10 year old 220cdi returning 45mpg with mostly town driving. I have put 33k on it from when I bought it with 80k on the clock. It has never let me down and it is not true what they say as any car older than 6 years is not expensive as the after market parts have fully kicked in. My friend has a newish Focus RS and it is nothing but trouble and very expensive and sucks fuel like GT's mum.
Don't think the merc is as solid as they used to be and I do fancy a 5 series diesel to replace it.
You can get very good deals on executive cars as that market is very flat and undervalued. 4,5 and 6 year old mercs and Bee em's are out there with full dealerships service histories.

Quite simple - if you've spent any time driving a Ford, then get another one. Otherwise, once you've got over the euphoria of the snobby badge, you're going to wonder why you bothered going for a so called 'premium' brand.

That's subjective. I don't drive a merc for the badge and i'll always get decent part x value on it.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't having a go at Mercs. They're nice cars, but Fords drive better. Even the AMG derivatives I've driven have been nothing to write home about.
