It's new car time. My 2008 mondeo is very good etc but very boring.
BMW 530d or Mercedes E320 CDI? Both around 2005 ish and saloons.
Or am I missing a better option.

  • Cars of that age and that type will have done well over 100k miles, and you're going to start getting problems occuring. Being BMW/Merc, the spares will be expensive.

Much better to buy my Astra, 54 plate, just over 100k miles (119k to be precise) and parts at cheap, because it's an Astra! Honest!
It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

    Skoda Octavia VRS Estate.

I've had 5 cars in the last 3 years and this is the only 1 I'd like to keep.

He's welcome to! He'll find nothing but love and adoration for my car. I'm the envy of many as to how little work I've needed to do to it over the years I've had it. Prime example of mid-noughties engineering!

    Why diesel?

If you have to go with a "prestige" mark of that age then why not go petrol and get an E55 or 540?

Besides the obvious choice of a 335d you mean?
I don't think a 530d or E320 are going to be any more interesting than your Mondeo to be honest. Do you do enough miles to warrant a diesel? TKM's Astra would be more exciting, you'd have the excitement of never knowing if you're going to arrive at your destination. If you want something more exciting, but still reasonably practical, something like the Skoda VRS mentioned above. A sporty petrol engine will always be more fun, if you're not doing big miles the saving in purchase price will buy a lot of fuel.

The BMW's and Mercs I have been looking at are old but low mileage. I was thinking diesel for reasonable mpg with big engine torque.
Octavia VRS is a nice idea. I guess the Mondeo 2.5 turbo could be good as well.

VRS is cool, is the mondeo you're talking about the ST? I think it's an awesome car, but I'm young so my opinion might be regarded as boy racery. Saying that, I think cars like that guy who wanted his van photoshopped the other day are dumb. Keep it as basic as possible. No stupid blingy alloys, no added body work. Just stuff like removing a few badges etc. Rolled over bonnets to make it angry are pretty cool though.

Diesel will get you big torque, but a very narrow power band. The 2.5l ford engine does sound lovely when it revs, a lot to be said for it. Diesels are not as simple as they used to be and running costs can be quite high as they have become more complex. They only really make sense if you do a high mileage. Now they have finally realised diesel emissions are rather nasty they are going to start taxing them more so makes petrol a little more favourable again.

I think the V60 R has the same engine as the mondeo, 2.5 turbo five cylinder. Fun for a big swedish tank.

It is a Ford engine yes. Its pretty quick and looks OK for an estate car. I opted for some stupid 19" wheels which i have smashed to bits in the 3 months i have had the car

The 2.5T is actually a Volvo engine, ford borrowed it for the focus ST and lowered it's output.

I've got an 06 Mondeo ST in diesel flavour, good car and done 40000 in it. Once I've finally bought my new house I'm looking at getting the octavia Vrs again in diesel especially as I can get one new for less than 20k.

It was a Renault engine originally.

A 1.6 diesel in a car that size must barely move!
Had a look at a BMW 535d last night, holy crap that thing is fast. I would say it goes better than my father's 4.2 V8 Jaguar XJ and it's certainly going to be more economical and more reliable.

I've got a volvo, we can be friends.
Mines a p2 v70 t5, like the coppers have but with leather and not piss stained cloth.
Fast with handling to match plus no one tries to race it or nick it as it looks like any other volvo. Won't ever get rid of it, unless it's for a D5. Can recommend.

Just selling my dads old S60 D5. its done 280k and still drives like a dream. Beautiful engine. Mine is a 14 plate V60 D4, with the new higher out put engine. Its pretty quick for a family estate car and handles like a hot hatch! Very pleased with it to be honest.

So essentially, the point of this thread is to establish which diesel repmobile is the least boring?

If you want a fun car, actually get a car that isn't boring.
