Couple of life-changing rides for Péraud and Pinot. That was great.

    Eye-popping margin to Martin.

I'm sure he'll be disappointed to lose second place, but that was a serious ride from Pinot. 11th is a 50+km tt that suits the big ring specialists is not to be sniffed at. Shows that he's been working hard on the discipline too so bodes well for the future.

    Nibali is flying.

I hardly noticed this: the French battle for the podium was way more interesting for the French directors. "Oh, by the way, there's a yellow jersey riding somewhere."

I do appreciate how some thing in the Tour never change though. And that we have a classic podium in Paris again, with an Italian and two Frenchies. No Americans, Brits, Australians, Kenyans etc.

Excellent podium isnt it. Very happy with that.

Pinot and Bardet are lighting up this race for years to come. Both their TTs are great.

Remember also that Pinot wasnt on a team dedicated to him and his team is not even the best by s lobg shot.

Give him Spec TT training team and he is gaining significant amounts of time.

Tony Martin: what a fine chap - "maybe this Tour will lead to a new level"

Must be tempting to burn some of that ridiculous power margin to climb better.

Which is why sky want to sign pinot as he could win the TDF in the future.

Peraud lost 1.18 to Pinot on the circus stage, mainly due to a puncture and was more or less second strongest in the mountains. Very deserved 2nd place. His cycling career is sorted for life.

Niabli enters the pantheon of greats with a Vuelta, a Giro and a Tour. Superb rider who showed his superiority many times this Tour when he could easily have sat back defensively. Excellent comments by him all Tour. Very happy for him.

He said of today: "To honour my team, this race and the jersey, we most give it due importance and I'll ride it like a leader."

    2013 Froome - Kreuziger (5th) +7:27

    2014 Nibali - Péraud (virtual 5th) +7:52

Similar GC pressure. Similar margins. FWIW.

Nibali in the jersey since stage three. Credit to his team for defending it so well. It helps if you leader is that much superior but even so, well done. He remained calm and controlled the entire race.

...and if he is riding for them they could order him to sit up so as to let Froome win, just as they ordered Froome to ease off when he was giving a Wiggins a hard time.

No self-respecting young GC rider is going to be joining Team Froome anytime soon unless they are an idiot. And young Thibaut is no idiot.

Not worth much if anything at all but how do you put Peraud virtual 5th?

Hmm. Lets not get carried away. I like both Pinot and Bardet and they have deserved their podium places. But if Quintana, Froome, Contador and Nibali start the Tour next year then they won't be getting anywhere near the podium.

In 3 or 4 years time maybe.

Quuintana, Froome and Contador above him presumably?

Fair enough. It's fantastic for Péraud, and well deserved. But I doubt he'd beat Quintana, Froome & Contador. I thought it was more meaningful than comparing the margin from 1st to second when playing the Nibali vs Froometador game.

Fair enough too. But Nibali wasn't there last year and if froome or contactor had been here to the end I'd expect that the actual gap between Peraud and nibali would have been much bigger.

Not quite, he lost it for a stage. It's been a great race by Nibali and I gave no doubt he'd have won if Froome and Contador hadn't had their mishaps but he could afford to remain calm and controlled once Contador was out as he was never really put under pressure from what I can tell from reports (missed most of the second half of the race). Overall he showed himself as the best rider on whatever terrain was thrown at him and is like an old-school pre-Armstrong era 'GC specialist' champion.

Just watched it and by crikey Pinot has scope to improve his tt. Off his aero bars too much, moving his head around, slow cadence, uncommitted in the corners etc etc. An excellent time despite all that and was really pleased he stayed on the podium, but some focus from a top team could get much more out of him.

So where should he move to? Jeannesson killed himself in support but not much more from FDJ for him.

I'd like to see him stay put and hopefully more sponsors putting money into the team so they can build support around him. The sport needs a strong French based team or two rather than their rising stars going elsewhere.
