You can't criticise Wiggo for his track stuff, after all that is where he started, he is bloody good at it, he has Froome in the way for the GTs...

And, unlike Contador, he isn't a doper.

I do agree that he hasn't performed at all well in BMX races, in fact he's been as anonymous as Zubeldia.

Hang on, you think most of them are on it. Why are you so sure about Wiggins?

Er, that'll be most of them then. They just haven't been caught yet.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Curious if anyone on here started riding a bike because of Wiggins?

That would be me. Having watched Cav get the red jersey in the Giro & Wiggins win the Tour it inspired me to get on a bike and ride.

Me too, sort of (I don't really like people who actually win, prefer underdogs :D ).

I doubt you'll find many people who started riding JUST because of Wiggins, it's more the general increase in visibility cycling's had over the past few years. I've ridden bikes all my life, but I got a proper roadie in 2012 after the Olympics/Tour de France. Not that I rode it much until this year though.

    But not Wiggins.

Bradley Wiggins is to Sky and British Cycling what Ryan Giggs is to Manchester United. He's so much part of the furniture and brand that they'll keep him around as long as he wants to be and can make some sort of contribution. If he gets indulged then it's because he's earned it.
    Absolutely and with good reason.

He won the Tour and that gives you privilege.

If his riding the track and targeting the spring classics gets people interested then more power to him.

Contador has won three Tours, two Giros and Two Vueltas.

Following on from your reasoning I wonder what privileges he should be entitled to?

Two points... 1 he is not British and therefore isn't relevant to a post about British cycling and 2 I don't count all of those as credible wins. In my opinion.

Oh and 3 Contador wasn't the first Spaniard to "win" the Tour.

    Completely different case.

I am just expressing an opinion that as the first British winner of the Tour he will get certain privileges as he has opened up the sport to many.

Your comparison with Contador wasn't relevant.

Take Riis (albeit not long term) being the first Danish Tour winner and the difference he made to the sport back home.

I am not sure why my stance is so controversial ! :)

As far as I`m concerned, when I first heard my 2 grandkids racing each other on mountainbikes, shouting "You be Cavendish, I`m Wiggins" I decided they were both worth every penny they get paid.

A "part 2" to this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/commonwealth-games/28476411 (sorry if posted elsewhere)

Part of me wonders what will happen if next years tour has a decent amount of TT's in it.

Probably not on here, but there has been a huge increase in the number of Sky Full Kit W@nkers on my local roads in last 3 years

Have you ever been overtaken by one?

    Ha..certainly not

    Same. Ditto Rapha riders.

I'll happily destroy you in Surrey in rapha kit mate ;).

    This is annoyingly true... :P

Clearly team Sky and Wiggins haven't been a great fit of late. Every interview he seems to retreat further from the idea he's going to have any serious future on the road at all.

I do hope the hour record is still on his mind. That would be so much more significant a finish to his career than any amount of extra track medals
And still looking forward to seeing him in the full cobbled classics season next spring

Agree with above I would also love to see him do a classics season and go for the hour.

Whatever is said I feel Sky do at least owe him the support he's asking. Be a shame to see him fallout with uncle Dave but uncle Dave isn't so cuddly with Wiggo these days.

Listening to the interview last I took 'politics' for interfering riders girlfriends

I think last night track final showed to win gold at Rio will take a lot of hard work and sole dedication in the next couple of years. Of course some see this as 'taking it easy'

Things Wiggo says in interviews and then what actually happens are usually 2 very different things - this year with the Commonwealths as the most recent example. Sometimes he just likes to stir things up. Or maybe he's changing his mind all the time - he does seem a bit fragile at best of times.

I've got a load of respect for the guy though and love to watch him race. I'm pleased he's back on the track for a farewell tour because it means he's likely to pop up at Revolution events again so I can cheer him on like the good old days.

And, controversial I know, but I also reckon in time he'll be counted as a double Tour winner. There's no way AC and AS were clean in 09. That's my opinion though, others won't agree and I don't need shooting down for it.

A telling quote from the Guardian interview I think: "...a good distraction from all that Tour de France nonsense.”
    (My italics.)

I don't think he'll ride a GT again. And why would he.

He is on the Sky Road Cycling Team. The key word is Road. Sure it is hard to get a medal but he should leave Sky Road Cycling Team and not get paid for them for having an easy ride (if he rides at all) on the Road. Open up that spot and salary for Road riders.

I'd argue that's none of your business... what Sky does with its money.

It's also wrong, he rides for Sky Pro Cycling - the team set up especially to allow Team GB riders to ride with a Pro Team on the road to help their Gold Medal Training
