It's terrible though - everything was shaping up for a gripping contest, and suddenly there's one fellow miles ahead of his rivals and seemingly nobody capable of mounting any sort of challenge. We thought it would all kick off on the final summit climb, and it's become rather a damp squib. We might as well give up and start watching the GC for a proper battle inste-

    Oh.

There is, however, a team competition... Lampre are looking like they're leading that :-)

No way according to that advert on Eurosport. Lampre have the fastest bike in the world, ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8iLAHqzfls

Apparently "riding means cycling against wind". Thanks Merida for pointing that out, I never noticed.

No, he'd have to lose over an hour and then he would be eliminated anyway. Cheng looks safe at present.

It would not be good for the team leader to steal CHENG's chance of glory in this. Leave it Kittel. Mitts off. This is CHENG's. You've got your stage wins, now do one.

Cheng is heading into the realm of the sprinters and will have to be on guard for attacks. He needs to look over his shoulder,a lot.
Whats the solution? Just pedal faster you baby.

The UCI better check Kettel's bike to make sure he's not trying to get an unfair advantage by trying to wiegh his own bike down or deflate his own tyres.

They better be doing random tests for eating too many pies.

Quality from Cheng in today's stage as Viviani "lost" some time.

Kittel and Cimolai now onto the podium with Viviani and Demare not losing enough time and drifting up the classification. Cheng defended his position well increasing the time gaps...

Oi Dolph Lundgren, don't even think about it!
  • William Bonnet FdJ - he's going to be tired and old enough to know what to do
Minus fourth now. Just one miscalculated echelon and he should get to the pyrenees in a commanding position

Does anyone know what the record time is for the Lanterne Rouge?

Is Chen on track to smash it with his +04h 13' 17'' ?

Thanks for keeping this updated, people. I'm currently on holiday and not able to follow all that closely. Some time gaps, gains and losses would be magic if anyone has the time and inclination though ;-)

Oooh, Mr Cheng- I see a worthy Lanterne in the making. Keep up the good work, sir!

Humble apologies for not being around recently. After a superb weekend in Yorkshire (where I can joyfully boast that in the Saturday morning peloton riding from Catterick to Leyburn, the Lanterness was...........moi. On a borrowed Granny bike. A proper one, with a basket.) It's not easy being a Lanterne at all. Firstly, I had to ensure that I was dropped immediately. Thankfully, these soldier types were unconcerned about leaving a greying woman behind, some nonsense about being family. I then followed another Lanterne rule and became lost, although I did have interesting conversation with several sheep.

And then I stopped for a cup of tea.

    Simples.

Anyway, I then suffered a week of flu for my trouble. The type where I didn't have enough energy to lift a lap-top.

I only rose from my sick bed to morph into........a Clydesider.

    I'm knackered.

I wonder what my next incarnation shall be as.

The team clearly got behind his effort yesterday when it became clear that Marcel was a morsel overcooked in the Alps. The best sprint train in the peloton upholding the traditions of the race: impressive.

No change in the bottom four, with the time gap between Cheng and Cimolai staying much the same. Kittel has now drifted down into the top 5...

Good to see CHENG is still holding firm. He's been a steady rock in what has been an emotionally tumultuous Tour and for that he will always have my gratitude.

    Thanks CHENG.
