    Much prefer Kirby to Hatch.

I also don't like the way that Hatch says 'illuminous yellow'.

cheers for the language explanations, my French colleague said pretty much the same and it was down to the 'R' sound being 'err' meaning the deux was fully sounded and the two words ran into each other.

I was thinking that Dan Martin should be Brummie with a touch Wicklow, loik ;-)

Same here, I find hatch annoying; I find Kirby amusing.

Oh dear, you must be tricky to please. :(

Stephens and Smithy are my current preference.

I'm quite taken with Matt Stephens as a commentator, if that helps. And I'll always stick up for Kelly.

    No worries.

I tried to find out the answer to your question as to what Ag2r actually stands for but after about 10 minutes I decided life is too short to spend trawling through French insurance websites...

Apologies for the off-topic diversion, but when Arsene Wenger arrived at Arsenal and started hoovering up French talent, one of the Danish commentators confused the hell out of me by his pronunciation of our new French rmidfielder, Ray Parleuuuur. That's as close as the Romford Pele ever got to continental sophistication.

My colleague had never heard of the company and doesn't follow cycling so I think the whole conversation was as surreal as one of Kirby's flat stage tour commentaries. :P

..There's not a lot of competition on Eurosport though!
Really don't understand the constant criticism of Eurosport commentators. Between them they all range from good to very good. Far better than any football commentator. I'd like to hear (perhaps I wouldn't) John Motson speak for fours hours non-stop. During a Giro stage last week even Sean Kelly said it was 'boring'. The commentator has to work hard to keep us interested... and they do.

As I've said before. If you think it's easy get a few friends round, sit them in front of the telly, switch the sound off and commentate. You wouldn't last a minute..!!

    Why the criticism and complaining?

Because we're fans. Its our job.

Commentary may not be easy - but some (Harmon, Kelly, possibly Hatch) are better than others (Kirby, Stevens) - though currently none are terrible (late career Duffers) and some (Stevens) are new to the job and so it's probably fair to say they show potential. Nothing wrong in commenting on that - it's a discussion forum after all.

Yes I know. That's why I've commented that I don't understand the criticism.

I like Hatch and I approve of his pronunciation.

Even better that he pronounces everything as close to the local dialect as he can and Kelly says "Tour of France" and pronounces everything with no regional twang. Complete opposites :-)

I assume Kirby isn't included in that range between good and very good?

On the second point, these people are doing it for a living so your comment is much like suggesting we have our friends around and do open heart surgery for criticising a doctor for not being up to an expected standard.

I am just about to go to bed and thanks to this post and the one before I am now doomed to have nightmares about being subject to open heart surgery by a slavering, rambling Quigley with the only uncertainty being which body parts will be amputated in error.

Another supporter of Rob Hatch, good to listen to unlike Matt Stephens, who I find painful to listen to as he continually uses short sentences. My favourite is still CK, with his jokey, relaxed style.

It's so easy to criticize, such a difficult job.

I'd be happy to have the chance of hearing Rob Hatch's commentary! My Eurosport player is transmitting the background sound (crowds cheering, motorbikes accelerating etc) but no commentary. From what I've read on this forum, some people would pay good money for that, but I'd like to hear Messrs Hatch and Kelly too. Does anyone have any idea how to achieve that with ESP?

I really miss Carlton Kirby, glad he's doing the Tour.

Although Rob Hatch's knowledge of cycling seems good, his insistence of pronouncing every foreign word in the right dialect annoys me.
The BBC News, which is the gold standard in broadcasting doesn't do it, and I don't think I've heard it on any other sport either, is it really necessary?

Rule #89 // Pronounce it Correctly.
All races shall be referred to by the name given in its country of origin, and care shall be taken to pronounce the name as well as possible. For Belgian Races, it is preferable to choose the name given in its region of origin, though it is at the speaker’s discretion to use either the Flemish or Wallonian pronunciation. This principle shall also be extended to apply to riders’ names, bicycle and component marquees, and cycling accoutrements

    Accent, not dialect.

Necessary? Maybe not, but desirable, and preferable to mangling the names so badly the viewer has to guess who’s being talked about. Besides, there’s no alternative for someone – like Hatch – who speaks a foreign language and therefore knows the approximate pronunciation.

Thank you for kindly correcting my mistake.

I'm pretty sure Kirby speaks a foreign language, and to be honest his or any of the other commentators mispronunciations have never spoilt any race I've watched.

Ok, I'll accept if he speaks that language he'll do it naturally without thinking, still confusing as I'm having to re learn who's who and what teams are which.

There's a woman on Sky Sports News who does the same, Kate Abdo, she's a fluent in French, German and Spanish. She's stunning though, so forgiven :D:D:D
