I know they universally cover everything in Red Oxide and I can see where you're coming from but no.

The threads on the horizontal bar are in opposite directions so I guess it pulls something (or itself) apart or together depending on which way the bar is turned?

the '+ shaped' parts the threaded shaft sits in move together or apart when the shaft rotates, and the arms they are attached to pivot. the towing eye suggests it will be mounted to the rear of some sort of vehicle, which means the view we have is of the top (so we are looking at a birds eye view of the machinery laying on its side).

if, when the machine is upright, i reckon the threaded shaft, when it spins, will move the +'s closer together to raise the shaft (imagine that the shaft in its current orientation will move to be pointing at the viewer, pivoting about the corroded (green) bolt head)

haven't got a clue what it is used for though...

It is used specifically for tensioning electric fences for heavy-duty sheep.

@gingaman. You are very roughly on the right track. No, sorry, don't have other pictures.

@RDW - in a parallel Welsh universe maybe.

Is it used to tension the overhead cables in telegraph lines?

Ahh! if you zoom in right at the bottom of the big lumpy bit on the left, it looks like the whole thing is fixed around something that does look suspiciously like a section of telegraph pole.

Not sure whether this is relevant but given the clue above . . .

In day's of old when men were bold and women were never invented,
they bored holes in Telegraph poles and were all quite contented.

Absolutely nothing, nada, diddley squat, zilch to do with telegraph poles.

No and unfortunately it doesn't launch sheep or marbles.

    By the size of it:

It's nothing to do with opticians or lenses.

It's nothing to do with windsurfing or sailling.

Is it from an early military vehicle, bridge building or similar?????

No. Its a straight photo of them at "normal" scale.

Telling you the scale might make it too easy.

Its not under a microscope or through a telescope.

Clue: I saw them on eBay doing a routine search for something I need. I'm not buying those things, I just saw them and thought of this thread. Once you guess what they are, I'll link to it.

Thanks for your interest Manc, but can you wait until it''s your go.

You can have a go if you guess the current object, or if the person who guesses the current object can't put another photo up.

This is what we're working on at the moment......

No, you're way off. It is not an agricultural artefact. It has nothing to do with sheep or marbles either.
