Latest update... Shu is currently at 1880 miles in 7.5 days and currently resting - she is very tired!
The plan is to get to the second cut-off at 2051 miles and then have a proper (much deserved) sleep before the final (1000 mile!) push. She is currently in third place (one lady appears to have had a dodgy tracker, but has been ahead the whole time) - that said, the goal is to finish and be the first British woman to do so within the time limit.
Meanwhile Christoph Strasser is homing in on Annapolis - he has only 50 odd miles to ride and looks certain to smash his own record. His ride really is something else - he's averaging 16+ mph (or 19+ if you allow him 4 hours off the bike every 24 hours).
T419 (Dave Zabriskie and chums) are now at 2010 miles - the teams start four days later and have a shorter time limit.0 -
These riders are truely inspiring....0
-
Really tight at the top of the women's race - positions 1&2 separated by 11 minutes at 1977 miles!
Shu's still in a strong third - amazing stuff. She still looks in good shape in the latest photos. Go on!
Strasser looks to be around half an hour away from completing now - just amazing. Mark Pattinson still in second, which is great stuff.
Amazing achievements all around. Just being on the start line is an astonishing achievement.
Edit - sorry Strasser has a little further to go than I thought - but not much! He's approaching TS53 now.0 -
Great event, I'd love to do it (as part of a team ) sometime0

CHristoph Strasser is just about to finish.... and I appreciate that I've found this way too late, but he has a live stream:

Unfortunate end for Shusanah's adventureShusanah Pillinger - The Road to RAAM

Dear followers... unlike the many miles of straight, unbroken roads on RAAM, it would appear that a broken clavicle which is protruding at a wonky angle is not as conducive to racing across America. Unfortunately this is a game changer which cannot be accommodated within the cutoff time. Thanks for all your support which kept the team going this long. Back after beers
Nic, please pass on our best wishes and admiration.“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0 -
Ashamed to say I did nt look at this thread until today but that's amazing!
Seriou dose of ManUp needed from me to just get on and do the 12hr MTB solo I'm umming and ahhing about at the end of August!
(and although it's a truly atrocious article from the DM, you can't knock Pippa Middleton for doing it.)We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Gutted for shu and her team.
She was doing so well, and has still achieved something beyond amazing.
I hope she heals up well and I hope that she can regroup and consider another attempt when she is ready.
In better news, mark pattinson looks to be very close to finishing now, 50 miles or so to go. So a great second place looks likely.0 -
-
Big respect to Shu for doing so well and wishing a quick recovery (and a long rest!)0
-
Ah, gutting having got so far. Did she have a crash or was it a pre-existing problem?0

Bit of sleep deprivation and lack of concentration by the sound of it:
From her Facebook page:
Shu had some good rest at West Alton, Time Station 35 @2050 miles. She made swift work of the first 46 mile leg to TS 37, but as the temperature soared to the high 80's at around 10 a.m, tiredness set in about 2 miles short of a scheduled sleep stop. On this occasion her bike slipped on the very edge of the tarmac and the soft shoulder.
Shu fell heaavily, suffering a complete fracture of the collarbone. Fortunately, Erica Ley was on hand to administer medical attention and Shu was soon x-rayed and patched up in Effinghàm medical centre. She is a robust character, and all things considered, is in good shape physically and mentally. Leading by example.
Awful bad luck, but still a very impressive ride.0 -
Crash - she took a tumble, catching a soft verge (if I recall).
She was motoring. A real star. I do hope she manages to get some support for next year (if I recall, she self-funded this time around)Commute: Langster -Singlecross - Brompton S2-LX

Team Joe Barr
WHAT AN INCREDIBLE TWO DAYS RACING! Joe moved up his field into second place and has blown the other riders out of the water. He has a strange look in his eyes and has entered a very primal state. It's like he is staring through all the hills and vallys, through all the pain and through everything America has thrown at him. Only 90 miles to the finish. Victory is in his sights.“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0 -
Thanks all for the support and interest.
Shame it had to end the way it did for Shu, but it was still a fantastic achievement.
Until next time!0 -
Just came across this race.

...so I know this isn't Pro Race - but hey it's my sister, so tough.
Shu is having another crack at RAAM this year - again aiming to be the first British woman to complete it solo within the time allowed.

That's 3005 miles / 175000 ft in 309 hours.

Oh cool. Glad she's going to try again! Fingers crossed...0
-
Best of luck! Been reading about it on the Beeb!0
-
I will be cheering her on for sure.
I've crossed paths with Shu on various Audax events this year and she's looking really good this year.
Go Shu!0 -
Best wishes to Shu Nic....will follow her crossing with great interest.
She deserves to succeed after the last valiant attempt.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom0 -

Good luck to her.
The tractalis site is great info. Numpty Q though, does the tracker only show when rider is active? Example this Friday morning UK time I can't see Shusanah 513 though I can see race leader Cristoph Strasser 377 near Del Norte CO. This is on an iPad, and I've seen comments about it not working properly on this device type.0 -
The official RAAM twitter feed said this morning that Tractalis was having problems.
There are also some issues with reception in the desert.
You can usually see if it is working for a given rider by the status of 'Running' instead of 'Unknown'.
According to the leaderboards, Shu has reached TS11

I know she went through 500 miles yesterday in around 1 day 19 hours, even though the temperature was in the mid 40s.0
