    Are spacers plastic or metal?

    ... does it matter?

And which bike will you be riding?

    The rigid with farked brakes?
The one with a loose stem and no bars?
    The one with wibbly wheels?
The one where you need to adjust the rear mech cable retainer (but can't use an adjustable)?
Or this one, which seems to be minus a cassette?

I would have thought even you could put together at least one trail worthy bike from that lot! (Hint: Park Tools)

And please, do post some pics

Either and no, many cassettes use plastic spacers between sprockets, most aftermarket spacers are alloy.

    Just bump this...

I want to upgrade to a 8-speed, and currently have a 7-speed cassette, with a spacer... will a 8-speed cassette (without the spacer) fit my frame no problems?

Does the spacer represent one cog of the cassette?

What - you've just 'upgraded' from 6 to 7. Now you want to go to 8?

I just assumed to upgrade to a 7-speed, since you don't get 6-speed non-freeweheel cassettes any more.

The wheel (or the hub) took a 8-speed I think, that's why I needed to spacer to lock it on tight.

Would like to go 8-speed, no cassette if that is possible.

Nope - it'll take an new xtr 11.

So we've gone from trying to get a cassette off with the wrong size lock ring that won't fit (don't see how the two are connected), to wanting to "upgrade" from 7 to 8 speeds without a cassette.

    God, please give me strength.

Thanks for that recap. What would we have done without you?

Wheel builder already said the 8-speed cassette will fit without the spacer.

I want to know If it would present any problems, fitting onto the frame?

    You might have a problem.

Did you read Parktools or Sheldon Brown - all the sizing info is there save for the very very latest generation.

Good luck fitting the cassette to the frame, most people fit a cassette to a freehub.

Being my normal helpful self, if it fits onto the wheel, and the wheel fits the frame it will probably fit.

Ah, but what if the width of the 8 speed cassette is wider than the freehub is designed for? The smallest sprocket will surely be too close to the stays :?

Doesn't the spacer use up the same width that an 8th gear would?

I already knew it'd fit the hub, that wasn't the issue.

You need and chain and shifter to match.

Chain should work OK and he's got down tube shifters I think?

    Getting a 8-speed shifter.

Got a KMC Z82 7-8 Speed Chain also unopened.

Was thinking of just trying the existing one, it looks exactly the same... says "narrow" and KMC on it - though it was originally for a 6-speed. Is that significant?

I believe Parktools says 6,7 and 8 speed are the same.

Don't put an old chain with new cogs, it wears them out quick.

Solution to that is a smaller cassette and new chainrings

Chain is essentially brand new, don't know if it will fit though.

What is the new chain-fitting standard?

Big-big cogs, bypassing the rear derailleur, and add 2 links?
