I do think going into Evans to get tubs fitted is a bit like taking your Lamborghini to Kwik Fit. Tubs are for racing and you've gone into London Bridge Evans whose raison d'etre is overcharging hapless commuters. And, as every one else has said, the time you've spent going into clearly inappropriate shops and then writing about it here could have been more profitably spent learning to do your tubs.

As Grill said, tubs aren't used exclusively for racing at all. The name above the door is irrelevant, it could have been Condor for all I care, the fact of the matter is the mechanic was not aware of a perfectly simple piece of kit.

Evans sell plenty of tubular wheels via their site. If I do a click & collect order, I would expect to be able to say "please glue the tyres on for me so they're ready to go when I come & collect". Not collect my wheels to then find another shop to do the necessary fixing!

So simple, you've not mastered how to do it yourself!

Guess you've not bothered reading the majority of this thread then? If I can't do something, I'll happily admit it. I can't really pull a wheelie, see?

Commuting to work combined with 14/15 hour days at the moment along with days at alternative offices means I simply don't have time to fart arse around with bikes. But of course, you'd know that because you read the thread...

The majority of the thread seems to point to you needing to learn how to do it rather than expecting someone else to do it for you.

Evans are a High St chain store, adjusting saddles and fitting baskets will be their main speciality, expecting them to fit your tubs is way beyond their remit, and even if the mechanic said he could do it would you really trust it coming fast down Ditchling?
  • It shouldn't be beyond any bike shop's remit though. No doubt they can strip down triple crown forks, all the variations of bottom bracket, service rear shocks on mountain bikes. How should that be different to knowing about & being able to service tubulars?

Went into Evans, hoping for better (stupid me). Apparently, they didn't have a compressor so couldn't fit tubeless tyres & wheels. Again, pointed out the obvious to which the mechanic replied "I don't even know what they are".

Hilarious isn't it. I was in Evans store Birmingham asking for valves for tubeless rims

they handed me an inner tube

They had no idea what I was talking about. Like my local Halfords when I asked for 10spd chain link. They said we only keep 9spd chain links because not many bikes have 10spd

I find most of the staff in the Birmingham branch are pretty poor really, but I think evans is good for what it is, good for beginner cyclists getting kitted out, probably slight;y overpriced but price match sorts that out :-)

How do you expect them to know about this stuff?
Do you think they go on training courses just for that one time someone brings in a tub wheel/tyre (that they bought somewhere else) to be fitted by them because they are convenient?
    Oh come on ...

I'd expect anyone calling themselves a bike mechanic to at least heard of tubs even if they've never seen one. They are not that obscure.

If you read/quoted my whole post you would see that exactly what I said about a mechanic

yer - but that doesn't start arguments does it ... ;)

I actually laughed out loud

    Your honesty is refreshing :D:wink:
