We should post it on facebook and ask people to 'like' it so he'll be saved.

I reckon mid flight he was thinking: "I can save this, I got it, it'll be fine, oh sh..."
Prior to that I'd say he wasn't thinking.

I'm now thinking that's the right (?Wright) order, but if the acid was talking, it would be saying "wheeeeerrrrrreeeee'ssss Syyyyyyyyyydddddddd?"

It is really very hard to believe sometimes that you are all adults. It's like being in the fecking playground.

Next time anyone posts on here about being knocked off their bike by an Audi driver or being crushed by a skip lorry, maybe the appropriate response will be :D:D:D:D:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Thank you all so very much for your concern and you'll be very pleased to note that I am feeling a little bit better.

Glad you decided to wear a helmet, its a sensible decision IMHO and clearly you have a better chance of enjoying life to the full compared to those who decide not to wear a helmet, hit their head and live the next few years as a vegetable.

Helmet wearing is a personal choice, you assess the risk, make the decision and then live with the consequence of that decision...

It is like being in the playground. Most posters come on here as a bit of a break from the day job, kind of like breaktime in the playground.
The problem is the helmet debate has been done to death on here so we're all a bit tired of it. I think most people on here probably do wear one, for those that don't they are aware of the pros and cons and have decided for themselves no to.
For what it's worth I generally wear one. Last time I got knocked of I broke a finger and damaged my arm yet I still kept being asked if I was wearing a helmet. I was, it was on my head.
Anyway glad you're feeling better and don't let a bit of light hearted banter bother you. Life's too short, especially if you're not wearing a helmet.

Helmet discussions are worse than pointless though. You're not going to change anyone's mind because most of us are adults that have come to our own conclusions about helmet use. All that these "Thank god I was wearing a helmet when I fell off" testimonials do is make people who routinely wear helmets feel better about themselves.

I know they're meant to be well meaning, but it contributes to the sentiment that cycling is an inherently dangerous activity and that cyclists who don't wear fluorescent body armor are negligent and irresponsible. This sentiment is part of the reason why most cyclists (armoured or not) have experienced abuse on the road.

So yeah, helmet discussions are pointless and damaging. Glad you were ok though.

The biggest problem with examples like that of the original poster is that it was just a one-off situation. I've had a number of crashes while cycling, without ever doing any damage to either my head or a helmet. However, the one time I could've really done with a helmet was when I was knocked down by another cyclist. The only problem - I was a pedestrian at the time. Everything else was fine, but I ended up at the hospital as a result of the impact of my head on the tarmac. So, if I was to use my one-off situation it would be a perfect argument for pedestrians to wear helmets in future, countered with evidence that cyclists don't need them.

All situations are "one offs" and a helmet provides protection in a specific scenario only. The OPs situation is one such scenario where a helmet provided protection.

In the situation where you got knocked down, it certainly supports the argument that pedestrians would benefit from wearing a helmet - although the probability of this scenario is vanishingly small, you were unlikely I would suggest. Most people would regard this scenario is an acceptable risk since we don't go round wearing helmets as pedestrians. But it does nothing to prove cyclists don't need helmets, just that this scenario is one where a cyclists helmet was not needed.

Well for the love of god, what the f**k do you expect?

Serious question. Explain to me why I should care about the fact that you chose to wear a helmet in a way that does not start "a debate".

Do some growing up yourself. And for the record, I'll just leave this here: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_control. Read up on this before you claim to "know" the effect something had if you expect anyone who dorsn't already believe you to be convinced.

Thankyou for your thoughtful reply. I assume you have read the relevant papers and meta-analyses thereof
You are welcome. Yes, you assume correctly, though I have clearly drawn different conclusions from them.
One of the key points to bear in mind is that normal road cycling is not actually dangerous by any sensible measure. Certainly not by a margin that justifies the use of specialist PPE. Portraying it as such does, however, appear to reduce the number of cyclists and there is evidence that increasing the number makes us all safer...
From which you are free to draw your own conclusions.... A freedom to cherish.

Agreed, the data is totally inconclusive. A helmet will only protect you (perhaps- its what they are designed and legally specced for) if you do something silly like fall off your bike and other low energy whoopsies. It will be a crushed as your skull is in a high energy collision such as a coming together with a car or tipper truck.

And you all smell of wee wee.
