And I thought Hatch was totally fine today2

I'm a hatch fan for sure, but even I thought he did very well today, the way he flagged up the fact that 'word had come through' that roglic was up by a huge amount was done with the right weight of 'drama' I thought.bobmcstuff said:And I thought Hatch was totally fine today

Jose Been goes off on a long monologue about her country’s lack of kudos for its top riders and completely ignores the race.
Meanwhile, Chris Froome turns up at the pointy end of the bunch at the top of the first climb."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -

Mercan Tour sounds like third rate US race that would claim to be the '4th GT'.0

I've had it on one monitor whilst working on the other and the commentary literally sent me to sleep. I'll be kind and call both voices 'soothing' and combined with the sound of the dishwasher going in kitchen next to my office I just couldn't keep my eyes open. Anyone not liking the Hatch hyperbole and / or Carlton's screaming should love this pairing.blazing_saddles said:Jose Been goes off on a long monologue about her country’s lack of kudos for its top riders and completely ignores the race.

Why is it fine for the youth to ridicule the middle aged and elderly wearing socks with sandals yet accepted for them to wear socks with sliders ?

Fashion (both look s**t IMHO but I'm not a trend setter). One day socks with sandals will probably be the ultimate trend, it possibly already is in Shoreditch for all I know (assuming Shoreditch is still the birthplace of all dodgy fashion trends).DeVlaeminck said:Why is it fine for the youth to ridicule the middle aged and elderly wearing socks with sandals yet accepted for them to wear socks with sliders ?

A "slider" is merely another type of sandal, wearing socks with them is entirely reprehensible.DeVlaeminck said:Why is it fine for the youth to ridicule the middle aged and elderly wearing socks with sandals yet accepted for them to wear socks with sliders ?

I had to google sliders. Flip flops cyclists have worn socks with them for donkeys years usually pre and post race.DeVlaeminck said:Why is it fine for the youth to ridicule the middle aged and elderly wearing socks with sandals yet accepted for them to wear socks with sliders ?

I was thinking he hadn't been too bad but now he's started getting freaked out by roundabouts again and saying how rare they were back in the day. You can tell how dull the race is though as even he isn't really getting worked up.1

I wonder if Wiggins' days on Eurosport and with podcasts are done.
Read a very recent interview about the abuse he suffered in his teens, and also how (I'll try and paraphrase) he has totally fallen out of love with cycling, doesn't have any interest in at all, doesn't watch any pro races etc.
The word hate may even have been in there.
If that is indeed where he is, unless it's for the pay cheque only, I struggle to see how he could be a pundit, but we'll see I guess.Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

That's a pretty sad turn around as he used to be a proper cycling fan as well as rider.daniel_b said:I wonder if Wiggins' days on Eurosport and with podcasts are done.

I remember Wiggins talking about people who were saying since he retired 'Ooh look at you, you've put on weight' to which he got pretty animated, replying with 'I'm not over weight, I am now normal. When you are that skinny, it's abnormal'. There was a large dollop of anger and resentment in there.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0

Last I heard, Wiggins was training to be a social worker.
Saw him fairly recently in Tooting with his new squeeze and their (?) kid. Seemed happy enough0 -
This paints a clearer picture:

Yes agreed - I've always been a massive fan, back from the velodrome days, and went to one of his shows I forget how long ago now, only a few years back now, which was really enjoyable, and carried out in an interview kind of format with that Matt Barber (spelling?) chap.Pross said:

He has, or at least had a LOT of cycling memorabilia, jerseys and bikes as well as I seem to recall, and at the time he professed a deep love and knowledge and history of the sport. I kind of thought of him as more of a hardcore fan than a pro rider if that makes sense.
People change of course, and I hadn't even clocked he had separated from his wife, so new start, maybe forgetting about the past is the way forwards for him.
Good luck to him, and I hope he can find what he needs to be happy.
EDIT: This is the interview I referred to https://cyclingweekly.com/news/bradley-wiggins-suffered-borderline-rape-during-three-years-of-abuse-by-cycling-coach
"Since retiring from the sport, Wiggins has spent time working as a racing pundit for Global Cycling Network (GCN) and other outlets. However, he confessed that he no longer has any interest in the sport in any form, and opened up on his past motivations for competing.
He also said that he got "no enjoyment" during his career, and his major achievements were just "like ticking a box."
“Now I don’t pay any interest to cycling- I couldn’t care less,” Wiggins said. "I don’t watch cycling anymore and have no interest in it. It filled a massive void in my life with a view to be close to my Dad. People say it’s a shame I’ve fallen out of love with cycling, but I was never in love with it- it was like a religion.”
He added: “You don’t fall in love with a religion, you adopt a religion. Now I’ve left my faith. I can’t stand it. I hated cycling, really. The act of riding a bike was a means to facilitate what I wanted to do with my life.”
One might presume that means he won't be doing any more of the luxury catered ride weekends with the fancy chef chap, I want to say Raymond Blanc?
I saw one of the cycling youtubers went on one in recent years, maybe to the IOW, or maybe not.Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

I like Wiggins but he's very all or nothing - this week he may hate cycling next week he may be back in love with it again.
If he wants to be a social worker fair play - I'll be equally surprised and impressed if he actually practises as one for any period of time though. Then again maybe he will - I can see how it would give life meaning - if that brings him contentment i hope he does.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]1 -
I'm pretty sure in Pinno's link it stated he considered being one and started training for a while - the wording making me think it was something he has since decided not to do - I could be wrong though.Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

It’s strange that he now says he was never in love with cycling. I assume he means the actual taking part as he has definitely previously spoken about how he loved it as a fan and even since retiring he ran a race team, was involved in various cycling businesses etc.1
-
Agreed, quite a seismic turnaround, if that is a good use of words.
He had his own team for few seasons, rode with them for 1 or 2 seasons, then had a collab with Rapha, and still does with Le Col possibly?
Also had a brand of bikes for youngsters that are still in high demand despite not being produced for several years - forget who they were sold through, Halfords or Evans I think - assume the former but could be wrong.
It maybe he had very little involvement in the clothes and bikes I suppose, and it was a badge engineering exercise.
He didn't strike me as that kind of person, but then perceptions of people in the public eye can be wildly wrong.
I think @DeVlaeminck makes a valid point, and it may well be in a few years he is back in love with the sport - time will tell I guess.Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

I don't think there's much point in overanalysing it, or trying to find a consistent interpretation. He's clearly got a lot of conflicting felings about it and doesn't have a coherent unified view. It's pretty normal really, just hyperfocused as that's all he's ever done and he's done it so hard.Pross said:It’s strange that he now says he was never in love with cycling.
