Carlton Kirby

You’d have enjoyed Carlton today @No_Ta_Doctor He was lecturing on Danish pronunciation but finished by concluding Danes don’t really get bothered by it as long as you make an effort as they know it’s a difficult language. There was also stuff about Double Danish as opposed to Double Dutch and no that’s not about pastries1

Thank God I had Rolf Sørensen instead :-DPross said:You’d have enjoyed Carlton today @No_Ta_Doctor He was lecturing on Danish pronunciation but finished by concluding Danes don’t really get bothered by it as long as you make an effort as they know it’s a difficult language. It's true Danes are fairly chilled about te pronunciation stuff. They are very unchill about naming the wrong riders in an attack and that sort of stuff though, so it's swings and roundabouts for him.Warning No formatter is installed for the format1 -
I am watching the ITT now.Pross said:Carlton is making up for a relatively decent day yesterday by spouting absolute bollox today. Someone please take the mic off him.
Within 15 minutes he’s not just talking utter Shiite about Mas being good against the clock but Cote du Rhone wine being the best value French vino at any price point?
Not sure which is the most wrong.

Exactly this. I’d add in addition that, shock horror, sports people, or anyone really, dont always tell the truth in interviewsNo_Ta_Doctor said:
I don't think there's much point in overanalysing it, or trying to find a consistent interpretation. He's clearly got a lot of conflicting felings about it and doesn't have a coherent unified view. It's pretty normal really, just hyperfocused as that's all he's ever done and he's done it so hard.Pross said:It’s strange that he now says he was never in love with cycling. I assume he means the actual taking part as he has definitely previously spoken about how he loved it as a fan and even since retiring he ran a race team, was involved in various cycling businesses etc.

I think that Carlton Kirby is the best. A lazy afternoon of cycling coverage is so much more enjoyable accompanied by his irreverent tones rather than Rob Hatch telling me that everything is unbelievable/unprecedented/superb.1

Carlton often commentates on Le Mans and other endurance motor sport events. Though he doesn't do it very well - seems often to be out of his depth but there is little hyperbole if any.
This evening, I was listening to the Le Mans free session commentary with it's relaxed but deliberate manner to which I lamented that cycling and many other sports would benefit from. It was fantastic to listen to informative comment without hysteria. Because that is the adjective I would use to describe Hatch, especially in the final few km's of a stage. Poor attempt at trolling3
-
The key thing is I'm less concerned about watching stages as I know Carlton will be commentating.
Yesterday I genuinely just watched the climb, saw Jonas was going to win and flicked over to the ZLM Tour.
I'd watched the cricket up until that point as I didn't want to have to listen to him.
It's demotivating me from watching when he's commentating3 -
Okay, we're all different. It's demotivating me from watching when Hatch is commentating.takethehighroad said:The key thing is I'm less concerned about watching stages as I know Carlton will be commentating.

Have a listen to the Le Mans qualifying today sometime and get a flavour of a quite different style of delivery.
There’s a lot of commentators and ground between not liking Hatch’s hyperbole to decreeing Kirby ‘the best’. Lloyd, Blythe, McEwen and Stephens (albeit rarely) are excellent. They do quality commentary and have fun in the process without overdoing it.2 -
It is all so subjective though - the 2 I'd ditch include one of your excellent list.[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]0

Unbelievably bad reading of the race by Kirby at the finish of Dauphine today.2

Wtf was he on about these past two days about Omar Fraile?
Is he still clueless as to how Skineos domestiques ride?

This was the post that I was saying was a poor attempt at trolling, not yours and was the one that stated Carlton Kirby is the best. Did anyone notice how friendly and responsive Brian Smith was in the Dauphine?
He's normally sullen to the point of rudeness when he's sharing comms with that tosser Kirby?
I think someone must have told him to cheer up and actually say something now and again.0 -
Hannah Walker made what I believe is her debut over the weekend on the Belgian chippers.
She was particularly impressive calling the sprint of the Elfstedenronde. Rider identification was on point and added the right amount of excitement to it3 -

I thought she was excellent in the main, still growing into that role - would like to hear her commentary.
Not a big fan of either of the Dani's commentary I must admit.
Ambivalent is probably a better word - doesn't reduce the enjoyment like ck, but doesn't seem to add much.Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

She's doing Tour of Slovenia at the moment with Pippa York. Literally the first thing I heard from Walker was a big "Oi!" as someone went down. Thought that summed up the situation quite nicely...takethehighroad said:Hannah Walker made what I believe is her debut over the weekend on the Belgian chippers.

So far she strikes me as someone who does a lot of homework, John Motson style, but she's giving York plenty of chance to speak too. It's a good pairing - I don't think I've heard Pippa York being quite this sparkly on comms before.1 -
She has done lead comms before I think- pretty sure she did some stuff on GCN last year, just not much.takethehighroad said:Hannah Walker made what I believe is her debut over the weekend on the Belgian chippers.

She sounds a lot like Paul Sherwen to me. That is supposed to be a compliment I should add.1
