Agreed 100%, felt like 'being in the company' of some knowledgable & enthusiastic friends chatting about a sport they love. So easy, natural and as a result very enjoyable to listen to.kingstongraham said:Imagine ck trying to keep talking about the race today. The bits I saw were a pleasure to listen to. No actual commentary for long stretches, but chatting.

Always amazed at people who complain about commentators (specifically Hatch) pronouncing names properly. It’s just respect to do this.
In another sport I follow rugby you can see the upset that the Pasifika players have that the commentary keep mispronouncing their names and making no effort to learn. I remember the stories of the great Bill McLaren going to training sessions meeting the players and asking them how to say their names as he wanted to get it right.4 -
Amazed at Hatch’s professionalism here only the slightest hesitation and then straight back to commentary you would never know something went wring1 -
I'm enjoy the Blythe/Kelly relationship.

Kirby would not have been able to resist dropping in "can somebody turn the tables on Sagan?" there, followed by a fit of giggles.neonriver said:

Couldn't agree more, an insular, and what should be, embarassing attitude, that never fails to make me cringe.neonriver said:Always amazed at people who complain about commentators (specifically Hatch) pronouncing names properly. It’s just respect to do this.

If anything he's doing us a favour, as we're learning how these names should be pronounced instead of wallowing in ignorance.Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

I think I said before, I do find Hatch's pronunciation a bit silly, but I don't really mind it for the above reasons.
The critical thing about his repetition is it's only for emphasis when something important happens - he's not repeating every line of commentary.
The thing with Kirby is not only that he regularly makes totally incorrect and nonsensical calls on what's happening, but he also doesn't listen to correction and sticks to his novelty clown guns until way after it becomes untenable.
It's not like Hatch doesn't make mistakes when calling things (although far fewer), but he usually says when he's not sure and he's happy to let the co commentator correct him in quick order. Especially with Blythe at the moment who seems to have the recent ex pro thing of being able to identify a rider from a glimpse of their elbow or something.
Hatch, Kelly and Blythe have made this relatively boring section of the Giro today perfectly watchable, entertaining even, whereas with Kirby it would have been two hours of drivel with Kelly getting cut off every time he said anything.2 -
I used to find it a bit odd (but mainly dropping into an accent rather than the pronunciation). The one I still find strange is AG2R as that is just a collection of letters but other than that I find it good to learn how a rider or place name is supposed to be pronounced.neonriver said:Always amazed at people who complain about commentators (specifically Hatch) pronouncing names properly. Yes but for those that don't he is leading them down a bad road. Last year on the Algarve tour he kept pronouncing Cachopo with an emphasised O on the end.rick_chasey said:If you speak the language of the name he’s saying it’s a breath of fresh air I can assure you.
The Portuguese drop the O and just say Cashope (best fonetic I could use)
So be careful believing all his pronunciations I would warn, it may sound good to an untrained ear but could be a load of carp.0 -

It's nice just hearing little cycling related anecdotes when there is little happening rather listening to the entire peloton and some people not even in the race being listed as potential dark horses for the stage.1

Whatever, just pointing out don't believe all you here. I fully realise that anyone who doesn't hate Kirby is not welcome on this thread and to be fair it all relates to the "What has happened to this forum" thread whereby unless you are one of the gang you can't voice an opinion.rick_chasey said:So instead you think he should pronounce...all of them wrong?
Perhaps it explains why it took me six years to post on here and why a lot of people stop bothering to post.
I'll leave you with Hatch

Now now, don’t be so sensitive.
What the point of a forum if we all agree?
No one is getting personal with you.

How do you know he's pronouncing them properly? Not saying he's a bad commentator but his pronunciations are are bit over the top. It's a bit Nigella Lawson and "Meekro Warvay" at times.Specialized Venge S Works

Well Rick, as a Dutch speaker, seemed to imply it was good to hear him getting Dutch / Flemish names right and I'm guessing there are a few on here or speak other languages fluently (certainly a few Italians).carl_p said:

He lived for some time in Italy, and currently lives in Majorca, so I expect he's pretty close to getting Italian and Spanish right at least. I lived in Italy for a bit, and his Italian sounds pretty good to my admittedly now non-fluent ear.
I made this point on another thread but I expect it would be unnatural for him to pronounce names/places any other way if he speaks the language. And the pronunciation probably stands out more amongst the English.
But don't worry, I'm not having a go, your opinion is just as valid as mine, my little poppet. It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.1 -

A pearler on the final ruta del sol stage - effectively a paceline at the front of the peleton, and whover was on the front peeled off, and Ivan Basso took over duties, Greipel follows the wheel (As he was right behind Basso) to become second wheel.
Apparently this was Greipel chasing Basso down - as if Basso was making an attack
ffs - any newbies watching were probably thinking these attacks off the front were happening everytime someone peeled off.

One exchange last week on one of the wet stages where Blythe was trying to get Kelly to come out for a ride in the rain and Kelly was having none of it. Went on for a few minutes until Blythe said 'Well, it's a wet ride or come to the karaoke bar with me'. Silence for a couple of seconds and Kelly, deadpan, said 'I'll see you outside on the bike'.tailwindhome said:I'm enjoy the Blythe/Kelly relationship.
